Chapter 5 - THE EMBEZZLER’S TRAPThe trap was set for the night of the annual Parker Logistics Charity Gala at the Plaza Hotel—the very venue where my father used to host his greatest philanthropic achievements.

The grand ballroom was breathtaking, filled with white roses, crystal chandeliers, and three hundred of New York’s most prominent business leaders, politicians, and journalists.

Ryan walked through the crowd dressed in his finest tuxedo, putting on a heroic display of charm, though his face was visibly pale and beaded with cold sweat. He knew the Zurich loan deadline was forty-eight hours away, and he was running out of time.

Victoria Vance stood near the champagne tower, wearing a sweeping crimson gown, sipping Dom Pérignon while casually surveying the room like a hawk watching its prey.

At 9:00 PM, I took the stage.

I wore a floor-length dark navy silk dress that caught the light of the chandeliers, my father's vintage diamond necklace sparkling against my collarbone.

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," I spoke into the microphone, my voice clear, commanding, and echoing perfectly across the ballroom. "Thank you all for joining us tonight to celebrate thirty years of Parker Logistics, and to honor the legacy of my father, Charles Parker."

The room erupted into warm applause. Ryan stood near the front row, forcing a tense, nervous smile, clapping along.

"My father built this company on three core pillars," I continued, looking directly at Ryan. "Integrity, loyalty, and absolute transparency. And tonight, in honor of those values, I have a very special announcement regarding the future leadership of Parker Logistics."

Ryan’s eyes lit up with a sudden, desperate ray of hope. He thought I was about to announce a massive capital infusion—or perhaps public praise for his tenure as CEO. He stood a little taller, smoothing his lapels.

"Over the past month," I said, gesturing toward the giant projector screen behind me, "our board of directors has conducted a comprehensive evaluation of our operations to prepare for our international expansion."

I clicked a small remote control in my hand.

The giant screen behind me flickered.

Instead of a corporate presentation, the screen illuminated with high-definition document scans, wire transfer receipts, bank statements from Grand Cayman, and crisp, clear photographs of Ryan and Victoria kissing outside the Soho bistro.

A collective, deafening gasp ripped through the three hundred guests in the ballroom.

Ryan’s champagne glass slipped from his fingers, shattering onto the marble floor with a sharp, echoing CRASH.

Victoria’s face turned completely white, her glass freezing halfway to her lips.

"As you can see on the screen," I said calmly into the microphone, my voice steady as a heartbeat, "our CEO, Ryan Parker, along with Ms. Victoria Vance of Vantage Capital, has engaged in systematic corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and grand larceny totaling over twenty-four million dollars."

"Claire! STOP THIS!" Ryan screamed, breaking through the crowd, rushing toward the stage with wild, panicked eyes. "Turn it off! She's crazy! She's had a mental breakdown!"

Before Ryan could reach the stage steps, two massive, uniformed security guards stepped out from the wings, grabbing Ryan by his arms and pinning him to the spot.

"Let go of me!" Ryan thrusted wildly, his face contorted in sheer horror as every camera, phone, and camera flash in the ballroom focused directly on his public humiliation.

I stepped down from the podium, holding my wireless microphone, walking slowly toward him until I was standing right in front of his face.

"I promised you I'd destroy you if you touched my father's legacy, Ryan," I whispered, holding the microphone close enough so my voice carried to every corner of the silent room.

"Claire... please," Ryan sobbed, his arrogance completely collapsing into pathetic, groveling desperation. "We're married! We can fix this! Don't do this to me!"

"Oh, speaking of our marriage," I smiled warmly, pulling a thick white envelope out from behind my back and sliding it into his tuxedo pocket. "Those are divorce papers. And as of four o'clock today, I bought your twenty-million-dollar debt note from Zurich."

Ryan stared at me in total, paralyzing horror. "You... you bought the debt?"

"Yes," I said smoothly. "Which means you don't owe twenty million dollars to a foreign bank anymore, Ryan. You owe it to me. And I'm demanding immediate, full repayment by midnight tonight."
