Chapter 3 - THE FIRST STRIKESilence descended upon the boardroom like a heavy iron vault door slamming shut.

Marcus Thorne pulled the contract directly out of Ryan’s hands, flipped furiously to page forty-seven, and skimmed the legal jargon. Within ten seconds, Marcus’s face flushed red with unadulterated fury.

"What in God's name is this, Ryan?!" Marcus roared, slamming his fist onto the mahogany table so hard the water glasses rattled. "This isn't an asset protection trust! This is an unauthorized hostile takeover document! If Claire signed this, she would have surrendered full operational control of Parker Logistics for zero consideration!"

Ryan scrambled, his hands flailing as he tried to regain control of the room.

"Marcus, calm down! It’s a legal misunderstanding!" Ryan stammered, his eyes darting frantically toward Victoria, who sat frozen in her chair, her face turned to stone. "The lawyers at Vantage Capital drafted standard boilerplates! Victoria, explain it to them!"

Victoria, ever the cold mercenary, immediately threw Ryan under the bus.

"I am merely the financial consultant, Mr. Thorne," Victoria said smoothly, closing her tablet and standing up with practiced grace. "The specific legal structures and equity clauses were requested directly by your CEO, Ryan Parker. Vantage Capital merely formatted the documents according to his explicit instructions."

Ryan’s head snapped toward Victoria in sheer shock. "Victoria! What are you saying?! You told me—"

"I suggest you iron out your internal administrative directives before involving Vantage Capital further," Victoria interrupted ruthlessly, grabbing her coat. "Mrs. Parker, Mr. Thorne, good morning."

She turned on her heel and strode out of the boardroom without looking back once.

Ryan sat frozen, abandoned, looking like a man whose parachute had failed to open midway through a skydive.

"Claire... honey," Ryan whispered, turning back to me, his hands shaking as he reached across the table to grab mine. "You have to believe me. I didn't read the fine print! The lawyers messed up! I would never, ever do anything to hurt you or your father's company!"

I pulled my hand back slowly, avoiding his touch as if he were covered in venom.

"I know, Ryan," I lied, my voice dripping with deceptive sympathy. "I know how overwhelming corporate law can be for someone who didn't grow up in it. That's why I'm taking over as active Executive Chairwoman starting today."

Ryan blinked, his mouth opening and closing silently. "W-what?"

"Marcus," I said, turning to our CFO, who was still glaring at Ryan with absolute contempt. "Call an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning at nine. I want Ryan’s executive authorization limits capped at fifty thousand dollars pending a full independent forensic audit of our accounts."

"Consider it done, Claire," Marcus said grimly, already pulling out his phone.

Ryan slammed his hands on the table, standing up, his face contorted in anger and humiliation. "You can't cap my authorization! I'm the CEO! I run this company!"

I stood up slowly, picking up my father's Montblanc pen, leaning across the table until I was inches from his pale, sweating face.

"You run this company because I let you, Ryan," I whispered softly, so only he could hear. "And if you ever try to play games with my father's legacy again, I won't just cap your authorization. I'll destroy you."

I turned and walked out of the room, leaving him standing alone in the cold sunlight pouring through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

That evening, I sat in my private car outside a high-end French bistro in Soho.

Through the window of the restaurant, I watched Ryan and Victoria sitting in a secluded corner booth. They weren't smiling anymore. They were arguing intensely, their faces red, gesturing wildly over glasses of untouched red wine.

I held my phone up, snapped three high-resolution photographs of them through the glass, and uploaded them directly to a secure file labeled EVIDENCE: FRAUD & INFIDELITY.

My phone chimed with a incoming message from Eleanor Vance, my attorney:

Claire, the forensic accountants just completed the preliminary sweep of the offshore accounts you flagged. You were right. Ryan has already siphoned $4.2 million out of Parker Logistics over the past eighteen months using fake consultancy invoices billed to Vantage Capital.

May you like

I typed back instantly:

Don't freeze the funds yet, Eleanor. Let him think he still has a way out. I want him to dig his grave so deep he can never climb back out.
