Chapter 4 - THE SHADOW AUDITOver the next two weeks, I played the ultimate game of psychological warfare.

At home, I acted like the dutiful, slightly worried wife. I made Ryan coffee in the mornings, asked about his day, and pretended to believe his pathetic excuses about "stressful market fluctuations" and "miscommunications with the board."
I watched him slowly deteriorate under the pressure. Dark circles formed under his eyes, his hands twitched whenever his phone buzzed, and he spent his nights locked in his home office, frantically drinking scotch while trying to re-balance the ledger books he had spent eighteen months cooking.
He didn't know that every keypress on his computer was being mirrored directly to my laptop through spyware I had installed on his network.
On a rainy Thursday night, while Ryan was supposedly attending an "emergency networking dinner," I met Marcus Thorne and Eleanor Vance in a private room at the New York Bar Association.
Spreadable across the large oak table were bank statements, wire transfers, and shell company registries linking Ryan, Victoria Vance, and a disgraced offshore broker named Julian Sterling.
"It's worse than we thought, Claire," Eleanor said, sliding a ledger sheet toward me. "Ryan didn't just steal $4.2 million. He pledged twenty percent of Parker Logistics' physical shipping assets as collateral for a private twenty-million-dollar margin loan from a predatory lender in Zurich."
Marcus shook his head in absolute disgust. "If that loan defaults—which it will in thirty days—the Zurich group has the legal right to seize our main fulfillment hub in New Jersey. It would paralyze our entire distribution network."
"Why did he need twenty million dollars?" I asked, my eyes scanning the foreign bank routing numbers.
"Because Victoria Vance wasn't just his lover," Eleanor revealed, pulling up a background check on Victoria. "She's a professional corporate insider trader. She lured Ryan into a high-leverage short position on a European tech stock last year. The stock skyrocketed instead of crashing. Ryan lost fifteen million dollars in forty-eight hours. He's been embezzling from your company ever since just to keep the Zurich loan sharks from breaking his legs."
A cold, ruthless satisfaction bloomed inside my chest.
Ryan hadn't just betrayed me out of greed; he had ruined himself out of utter incompetence and desperation. Victoria had used his vanity and lust to trap him in a financial vice, and together they had tried to murder my father's company to save their own skins.
"When does the Zurich loan expire?" I asked smoothly.
"In exactly fourteen days," Marcus replied. "On the fifteenth of the month. If the twenty million isn't repaid in full, they trigger the collateral seizure."
I sat back in my chair, swirling the water in my glass, a slow, lethal smile spreading across my face.
"Marcus," I said softly, "I want you to secretly purchase that twenty-million-dollar debt note from the Zurich lenders using my personal family liquidity trust."
Marcus stared at me in shock. "You want to buy Ryan's debt?"
"I don't just want to buy it," I said, my voice as hard as cold iron. "I want to become his sole creditor. When the fifteenth comes, I don't want a Zurich firm coming after Ryan."

I leaned forward, placing my hands flat on the table.
"I want to be the one who decides when his debt comes due."
