Chapter 5 - The Execution at the DrakeAt 6:00 AM, the grand, gold-leafed ballroom of the Drake Hotel in downtown Chicago was bathed in soft morning light, filled with the aroma of fresh coffee, expensive cigars, and tense corporate negotiation.

Sitting around a long mahogany table were the four neutral board members of Valente Enterprises—men who controlled real estate, rail lines, and political trusts across Illinois.

At the head of the table sat Charles Vance—a sixty-two-year-old, silver-haired billionaire from Manhattan, wearing an immaculate bespoke suit, sipping vintage espresso, a confident, predatory smile resting on his sharp face.

"Gentlemen," Charles announced smoothly, tapping his leather folder against the wood. "As of two o'clock this morning, Mrs. Clara Valente suffered catastrophic injuries in an unfortunate traffic collision on the South Side. Her voting proxies are currently frozen under emergency medical probate."

The four board members looked at each other nervously, adjusting their ties.

"Therefore," Charles continued, his voice rising in power, "under Section 12 of the Valente corporate charter, Vance Global hereby executes a primary takeover option for fifty-one percent of the shipping terminal shares—"

BOOM!

The heavy mahogany double doors of the grand ballroom were kicked open with a thunderous, deafening crash.

The four board members jumped out of their chairs in absolute panic.

Walking down the center aisle of the ballroom, surrounded by twenty broad-shouldered operators in dark tactical gear, was me.

I wore an immaculate charcoal suit, my long black overcoat draped over my shoulders, my six-foot-two frame cutting a terrifying, sovereign shadow across the gold-leaf floor. Beside me walked Mateo, holding a leather briefcase.

Charles Vance’s coffee cup froze halfway to his lips. His silver eyebrows pulled together in utter, horror-stricken shock.

"Valente...?" Charles gasped out, his voice cracking into a high-pitched squeak. "What... what is the meaning of this intrusion?!"

I didn't answer. I walked straight up to the head of the table, stopped two feet from Charles, and set my hands flat against the mahogany surface.

"Charles," I spoke, my voice smooth, calm, and echoing cleanly through the quiet ballroom like thunder. "You sent three Vance Global enforcers in an armored SUV to crush my wife's vehicle on 4th and Commercial Street last night."

Charles went dead pale. He stumbled backward in his leather armchair, looking frantically at his two private security guards standing near the stage. "That's... that's a lie! I was in New York last night!"

Mateo stepped forward, opening his briefcase, pulling out a tablet displaying certified GPS tracking logs, satellite imagery, and signed confessions from the two Vance Global enforcers who had been captured near the South Side docks three hours ago.

"The federal prosecutor in Manhattan unsealed an eighteen-count indictment against Vance Global thirty minutes ago, Vance," Mateo revealed cleanly. "Including corporate conspiracy, attempted murder, and illegal wire fraud."

Charles dropped his leather folder, his hands trembling so violently he knocked his espresso cup onto the rug.

The four neutral board members stood up instantly, their faces turning to iron as they looked down at Charles with deep, absolute disgust.

"You tried to murder Clara Valente, Charles?" Arthur Sterling, the senior board member, spat cleanly. "The daughter of Miguel Reyes?"

"Take him away, Mateo," I commanded softly.

Two uniformed federal marshals stepped out from behind my tactical team, placing heavy steel handcuffs around Charles Vance’s manicured wrists, dragging his crying, pleading body out through the double doors toward a waiting federal transport sedan.

The corporate takeover was dead. Vance Global was liquidated.

I smoothed down my lapels, turned on my heel, and walked out into the cool morning air, heading straight back to the hospital where my real life was waiting.
