Chapter 7 - Unbroken and Forever HomeAt 8:30 PM, as the summer sun dipped below the Texas horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of rose, amber, and deep sapphire, the backyard patio was illuminated by dozens of soft, twinkling fairy lights.

Sophie was fast asleep inside her bedroom, tired from a long day of playing with her puppy.

I stood near the wooden perimeter fence wearing a comfortable navy knit sweater, holding a warm cup of coffee, looking out at the quiet, peaceful neighborhood stretching before us into the night.

Footsteps sounded softly on the wooden deck behind me.

Claire walked over, wearing an oversized knit sweater, sliding her warm arms around my waist from behind, resting her chin comfortably against my shoulder blade.

"What are you thinking about, Daniel?" Claire whispered softly into my ear, her breath warm against my neck.

I reached down, covering her broad, warm hands with mine, holding her close against my chest.

"I was thinking about Christmas Eve," I confessed softly, turning around in her arms to look down into her clear grey eyes. "When I stood at that grocery register with twelve dollars in my hand."

Claire offered a breathtaking, genuine smile—a smile that lit up her sharp, beautiful features under the twinkling lights.

"You thought you were buying an apple pie for your daughter, Daniel," Claire promised, reaching up to press her lips softly against my cheek. "And you ended up saving my life."

I pulled her flush against my solid frame, holding her tight under the open sky, pressing a long, sweet, lingering kiss against her lips that sealed our promise for all the years to come.

There were no forged signatures sitting in dark server banks. There were no corrupt vice presidents lying in boardrooms. There were no tears swallowed over twelve-dollar bank accounts.

The quiet, defeated engineer was dead forever. The sovereign leader had claimed his throne.

And standing under the vast, unbroken sky, wrapped in the warmth of the woman who believed in me, holding my daughter's future safe in my hands, I knew that our peace, our lives, and our home were finally, beautifully, and forever safe.
