Chapter 6 - The Table in Lincoln ParkSix months after the night at St. Jude’s, the warm summer sun broke brightly over our new two-story home in the quiet neighborhood of Lincoln Park, Dallas.

The dark days of poverty, twelve-dollar bank accounts, and cold turkey sandwiches were buried forever under the weight of an unshakeable, sovereign victory.

My ten-year-old daughter, Sophie, thrived in her new private school, her laughter filling our sunlit home once again, her mother’s hand-knitted quilt resting proudly over her new velvet armchair in the living room.

On a clear, warm Saturday afternoon in late June, our spacious backyard patio was set with long white-linen tables, fresh flowers, and a smoking barbecue grill for a private family celebration.

Sophie ran across the green grass with her new golden retriever puppy, her dark hair catching the golden sunlight, her loud, sweet giggles echoing off the cedar fence.

Sitting at the patio table, wearing a comfortable white linen dress, sipping fresh lemonade, was Claire Whitmore.

Over the last six months, Claire had become a constant, beloved presence in our lives—visiting our home every weekend, bringing Sophie books on astronomy, and helping me manage the vast corporate restructuring of Whitmore Thermal.

I walked out onto the patio carrying a wooden tray holding fresh grilled steaks, corn on the cob, and a warm, freshly baked apple pie from the local bakery.

When Sophie saw the pie, she jumped up from the grass, running over to the table with wide, bright hazel eyes.

"Dad!" Sophie squealed happily. "You got Mom’s pie!"

"I did, sweetheart," I smiled, setting the warm pie in the center of the table. "Every single slice."

Claire looked up from her glass, her grey eyes holding a deep, weightless peace as she reached out to gently squeeze my hand under the table.

"You look good, Chief Engineer," Claire murmured softly, her thumb stroking my wrist.

"I feel good, Claire," I answered genuinely, looking from my radiant daughter to the extraordinary woman sitting beside me. "We built something real."
