Chapter 5 - The ReconstructionBy 6:00 AM on Christmas morning, the snow had stopped falling over Dallas, leaving the city blanketed in a clean, quiet layer of brilliant white.

The news of the emergency audit at Whitmore Thermal Systems detonated across corporate news channels by mid-afternoon.

Martin Vance and three senior procurement managers were arrested by Federal Marshals at their homes in North Dallas, charged with Systemic Corporate Fraud, Forgery, and Reckless Endangerment under the Federal Defense Production Act.

The entire Plant Four manufacturing facility was temporarily closed under direct executive order from Claire Whitmore, while an independent engineering team—led by a newly appointed Chief Quality Officer—began reviewing every unit produced over the last two years.

On Monday morning at 7:45 AM, I stepped out of the glass elevators on the penthouse floor of Whitmore Thermal Systems Headquarters downtown.

I wore my best dark suit—pressed and clean—holding a new leather briefcase containing forty-seven unredacted engineering logs.

The grand marble lobby was bustling with corporate attorneys, federal investigators, and senior engineers. But the moment I stepped through the glass doors, the room went completely quiet.

Standing near the center archway, wearing an immaculate dark navy suit, her hair styled in glossy waves, was Claire Whitmore.

When she saw me, she stepped forward, extending her hand before the entire executive board.

"Welcome back, Chief Engineer Carter," Claire announced cleanly, her voice carrying clean and crisp across the quiet lobby.

I reached out, taking her hand in a firm, unshakeable grip.

"Glad to be here, Ms. Whitmore," I replied.

She leaned in slightly, a small, warm smile touching her lips. "Your new contract includes a full back-pay settlement, a three-hundred-percent salary increase, and an independent budget for the Quality Assurance Division."

I blinked in surprise. "Claire... that’s generous."

"That’s not generosity, Daniel," Claire corrected deadpan. "That’s the cost of keeping an honest man looking after my name."

She pulled a small silver key from her coat pocket, placing it flat into my palm.

"And there’s one more thing," Claire added softly. "Look outside your new corner office window."

I walked across the parquet floor toward the sweeping floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the Dallas skyline.

Parked in the private executive bay below was a brand-new, navy-blue Ford F-250 Super Duty truck, bearing a small silver plaque on the driver’s side door: RESERVED FOR CHIEF ENGINEER D. CARTER.

I looked back at Claire, a genuine, bright warmth filling my chest for the first time in four years.

"Merry Christmas, Daniel," Claire whispered softly.
