Chapter 5 - Unraveling the PastBack at the hospital, the following days settled into a grueling, rhythmic routine of monitored heart rates, expressed milk schedules, and whispered conversations beside the incubator. The harsh fluorescent glow of the NICU became the backdrop for a delicate emotional rebuilding between Julian and Katherine.

One evening, while the hospital corridors grew quiet and the nurses dimmed the overhead lights, Katherine finally addressed the elephant in the room. She was sitting in a high-backed rocking chair near the incubator, her eyes fixed on their sleeping son, whom they had tentatively named Leo.
“You still had the papers in your car,” Katherine said softly, her voice carrying no anger, only a profound, weary sadness. “Even when you came upstairs to help me, they were right there in your briefcase.”
Julian pulled up a metal chair beside her, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees, staring down at his calloused hands. “I came here to end it, Kate. Seven months of radio silence, unopened letters, and my own arrogant pride convinced me that you had fled because you regretted our marriage—because you regretted me.”
Katherine turned her head slowly, looking at him with an intensity that pierced straight through his armor. “I didn't run away because I regretted that night, Julian. I ran away because the morning after, you looked at me like I was a liability—a weakness someone could exploit against you. You woke up next to me, panicked that you actually cared, and immediately started scheduling cameras and security details like I was a hostile asset.”
The words struck Julian like a physical blow because they were entirely, brutally accurate. He had been a coward, hiding behind corporate dominance because he didn't know how to handle the terrifying magnitude of genuine affection.

“When I discovered I was pregnant two weeks after you left for Europe,” Katherine continued, her voice trembling slightly, “every instinct told me not to call you. I wouldn't be tethered to a man who only kept me around out of obligation or fear of scandal. I wanted a husband, Julian, not a warden.”
Julian reached out, gently covering her cold hand with his own. For the first time in his life, he didn't offer a corporate defense, a financial solution, or an evasive maneuver. He simply squeezed her fingers and whispered, “Then let me learn how to be the man you actually deserve.”
