Chapter 3 - THE VISITATION OF THE PARASITESThe VIP ward on the 6th floor of Saint Anthony Medical Center smelled heavily of antiseptic, iodine, and public humiliation.

Two uniformed police officers stood guard outside Room 612. Inside, the heavy curtains were drawn, blocking out the morning sun.
Kenneth lay in the hospital bed, wrapped in bandages, connected to an IV drip. His face was pale, his lips chapped, his body rigid from the excruciating surgical procedure required to separate his skin from industrial-grade adhesive.
In the adjacent bed sat Maya, her eyes red and swollen, her hair a tangled mat, wearing a hospital gown that looked entirely devoid of her usual polished luxury.
The moment the door opened and I walked in—flanked by Justin, Marcus Vance, and two armed state detectives—Kenneth flinched so violently he pulled his IV line.
"Sabrina!" Kenneth whimpered, his voice scratchy and trembling. "Sabrina... please! You have to listen to me! Maya set me up! She threatened to tell you about the money if I didn't—"
"Shut up, Kenneth!" Maya shrieked from her bed, hurling a plastic water cup at him. "You lying bastard! You told me you were going to divorce her! You told me she was a useless, broken woman who couldn't even give you a baby!"
Justin stepped forward, his eyes locked onto Maya. The sheer weight of his silent, heart-shattering disappointment hit her like a physical blow. She instantly shrank back against her pillows, unable to meet her husband's eyes.
"Justin..." Maya whispered, her voice cracking. "Justin, baby... I was scared... Kenneth controlled all the accounts..."
"Save it, Maya," Justin said softly, his voice devoid of any anger—only a cold, devastating disgust that cut deeper than any scream. "I filed for an expedited annulment two hours ago. Every piece of jewelry, every designer bag, and every vehicle I ever bought you has been repossessed. You leave my life with nothing but the hospital gown on your back."
"You can't do that!" Maya sobbed hysterically. "I have rights! I'm your wife!"
"You were his wife," Marcus Vance interrupted smoothly, stepping up to the foot of her bed with a thick stack of federal indictments. "As of 6:00 a.m. today, Mrs. Lin, you are listed as a co-conspirator in a thirty-eight-million-dollar federal bank fraud case. State troopers are currently searching your home in Cherry Creek."
Maya’s face drained of every last drop of color. She looked at Kenneth, who was frantically staring at me, his chest heaving with desperate panic.
"Sabrina..." Kenneth wheezed, tears leaking from the corners of his eyes. "Please... we can fix this. I know you're mad about the affair... I know the glue was your way of getting back at me... but we're husband and wife! Think about our six years together!"
I walked slowly toward the side of Kenneth's bed. I pulled a chair over and sat down right beside his head, leaning in close so only he could hear my voice.
"I don't care about the affair, Kenneth," I whispered softly.
Kenneth blinked through his tears, a flicker of foolish hope igniting in his eyes. "You... you don't?"
"No," I replied, pulling the yellowed medical file from Saint Jude’s Hospital from my coat and laying it gently on his chest.
The moment Kenneth’s eyes landed on the Saint Jude’s logo and Dr. Victor Vance’s signature, his entire body went completely stiff. His jaw dropped, his eyes bulging in utter, unadulterated terror.
"Dr. Vance was arrested forty-five minutes ago at his home in Vail, Kenneth," I whispered, my voice smooth, calm, and terrifyingly close to his ear. "He has already agreed to a full plea bargain. He gave state prosecutors the audio recordings of you paying him $250,000 to perform a forced tubal ligation on me four years ago."
Kenneth began to hyperventilate. The heart monitor beside his bed began to beep frantically—beep, beep, beep, BEEP!
"You... you know..." he choked out, gasping for air like a fish thrown onto dry land.
"I know everything," I said, leaning even closer, looking into the depth of his cowardly soul. "You took my career. You tried to take my family's legacy. And you took my chance to be a mother because you were terrified an heir would stand in your way."
"Sabrina... I'm sorry... I'm sorry! Please!" Kenneth sobbed, trying to reach his bandaged hands toward me.
I stood up slowly, smoothing the front of my white blazer.
"The glue was just to hold you still, Kenneth," I said, looking down at him with pure, unyielding majesty. "So you'd be right here when the hammer fell."
I turned to the two state detectives standing by the door.
"Officers," I said calmly. "He's all yours."
The detectives stepped forward, pulling heavy steel handcuffs from their belts.
As the metallic CLICK-CLACK of the cuffs locked around Kenneth's bandaged wrists, his pathetic, echoing wails filled the hospital room, mingling with Maya's hysterical sobs.

I walked out into the sunlit hallway, holding my head high, my brother at my side.
For the first time in six years, I breathed clean air.
