Chapter 4 - The Truth on the BalconyThe night wind swept off the Hudson River, cool and crisp against the stone balustrade of the Grand Meridian’s private balcony.

I stood near the railing, holding a glass of sparkling water, looking out at the city lights reflecting off the dark surface of the river.

The heavy glass doors behind me slid open softly.

Michael walked out onto the balcony, holding his tuxedo jacket, stepping up beside me. He draped the heavy dark wool coat over my shoulders, shielding me from the chill wind.

"Are you cold, Sarah?" Michael asked gently.

I pulled his coat close around my deep blue dress, smelling the rich scent of cedarwood and rain on the fabric. I turned my hazel eyes to look into his storm-gray ones.

"I'm not cold, Michael," I answered softly. "I'm just... trying to understand."

"Understand what?"

"You're not just a fashion executive, are you?" I asked, my voice calm, clear, and devoid of fear. "The way those men looked at you in the ballroom... the way Victor Moretti trembled when you spoke... you run this city."

Michael stood still for a long moment, looking out at the skyline.

"Yes," Michael confessed quietly, his baritone carrying a quiet, heavy truth. "The fashion company is legitimate, Sarah. It belongs to my family's legacy. But the streets beneath this city require an iron hand to keep peace. I am the man who holds that hand."

He stepped closer, his broad fingers reaching out to gently, reverently frame my face, his thumb stroking my cheekbone with an unexpected, breathtaking tenderness.

"I brought you into my world because I saw a woman who was fighting for her brother with everything she had," Michael whispered into the quiet night air. "And for the first time in my life... I found someone worth protecting with everything I own."

My heart took a wild, dangerous leap against my ribs. I leaned my face into the warmth of his palm, looking straight into his eyes.

May you like

"I spent my whole life being afraid of the future, Michael," I murmured. "Because I was always fighting alone."

"You will never fight alone again, Sarah," Michael promised, leaning down to press his lips softly, fiercely against my forehead in a deep, unhurried vow. "Never."
