Chapter 2 - The Shadow over Mount SinaiBy 9:00 AM the following morning, my entire world had been fundamentally rewritten.

An emergency medical transport team dispatched by Michael picked Ethan up from our cramped apartment, transferring him directly to a private, sunlit suite on the top floor of Mount Sinai Hospital.

Dr. Richard Vance, the city's foremost pediatric cardiologist, conducted a four-hour comprehensive evaluation, placing Ethan on advanced cardiac monitoring and providing specialized medications that restored his breathing within hours.

I sat in a comfortable velvet chair beside Ethan’s bed, watching my little brother sleep peacefully. His pale skin had regained its healthy color, and his heart rate monitor hummed in a steady, reassuring rhythm.

A quiet knock sounded at the door.

Michael stepped into the private room, wearing a dark wool coat, carrying a small leather bag. His presence instantly filled the room with a calm, unyielding security.

"How is he?" Michael asked softly, stepping up beside the bed.

"Dr. Vance says his heart valve response has improved by thirty percent," I whispered, tears of pure, weightless relief welling in my eyes. "Michael... I don't even know how to thank you. You saved his life."

Michael looked down at Ethan, then raised his storm-gray eyes to meet mine. "You don't need to thank me, Sarah. You signed the contract. My promises are absolute."

He set the leather bag onto the small table beside my chair.

"What is this?" I asked.

"Your uniform," Michael replied, a faint, subtle smirk touching his lips. "We have an executive dinner tonight at the Grand Meridian Hotel. You are attending as my official coordinator."

I opened the bag. Inside lay the deep blue silk dress with silver embroidery—the exact dress I had stared at in the rain forty-eight hours ago.

Beside the dress sat a velvet box containing a platinum necklace set with sapphire stones.

I looked up at him, my breath catching in my throat. "Michael... this dress costs three months of my old wages!"

"That dress was designed for you, Sarah," Michael stated smoothly, his voice dropping into a warm, intense register. "Even before you stood outside the glass."

Before I could answer, my phone buzzed on the table.

It was an unknown number. I tapped the screen, setting it to speaker.

"Sarah..." a raspy, hostile voice sneered through the speaker. "Tell your new boss that the Moretti family doesn't appreciate him poaching hotel staff from our territory. Tell Michael Brooks that his little assistant is going to pay his debts."

The line went dead with a cold click.

My hands shook violently as I clutched the phone. "Who... who was that?!"

Michael didn't panic. His expression transformed from warm attentiveness into an apocalyptic, freezing stillness that made the temperature in the hospital room drop below zero.

He reached into his coat, pulling out his encrypted satellite phone, clicking the side button once.

"Leo," Michael commanded deadpan to his chief lieutenant. "Locate Victor Moretti's secondary operations unit in Brooklyn. Bring his lieutenants to the docks by midnight."
