Chapter 3 - Red Carpets and Whispering LensesThe grand ballroom of the Whitestone Medical Foundation was a masterclass in opulent intimidation. Crystal chandeliers cascaded warm light over five hundred guests draped in black-tie formality, while local news cameras and society photographers snapped pictures against the branded step-and-repeat backdrop near the entrance. The air buzzed with the low, expensive hum of corporate ambition, elite networking, and mutual ego stroking.

I stood in the VIP staging lounge backstage, adjusting the silver drop earrings that matched the streak of ice in my veins. Through the monitor feed, I watched the arrivals. Flashbulbs popped incessantly as local luminaries glided down the red carpet.

Then came Ethan and Sophia.

They arrived precisely at 7:15 PM, timing their entrance for maximum visibility before the primary media outlets. Ethan looked impossibly handsome, his posture upright, his smile polished and rehearsed. Beside him, Sophia radiated effortless elegance in a champagne-colored silk gown that clung to her frame. As they paused for the photographers, Ethan instinctively placed his hand at the small of her back—a gesture of ownership, protection, and unspoken intimacy. The cameras flashed greedily, capturing every calculated angle.

Behind them, stepping out of a dark sedan, came Mark Bennett. He wore a razor-sharp navy tuxedo, his expression carved from granite. He didn't stop for the cameras; he walked straight through the glass doors with the cold, unhurried gait of a predator tracking wounded game.

My phone vibrated in my palm.

Ethan: Where are you? The opening remarks start in fifteen minutes. Don't leave me hanging out here alone with the donors.

I stared at the screen, a slow, predatory smile spreading across my lips. I’m right where I need to be, darling.

I slipped out of the private green room, moving effortlessly through the service corridors until I reached the master audio-visual control booth overlooking the entire ballroom. My lead AV technician, a trusted veteran named Leo, nodded as I slid into the director’s chair beside him.

“Is the override ready, Leo?” I asked quietly.

“Locked and loaded, Madison,” Leo replied, tapping the digital console. “Whenever you give the cue, the main projector screens cut straight to the secondary feed.”

Down on the floor, the master of ceremonies took the stage, welcoming the esteemed donors, physicians, and civic leaders of Dallas. He thanked the primary hospital sponsors, specifically highlighting Dr. Ethan Carter and his invaluable corporate partner, Sophia Bennett, for their groundbreaking collaborative initiatives. Polite, thunderous applause rolled through the room. Ethan stood up from the VIP table, offering a modest, gracious wave while Sophia beamed beside him, basking in the public validation of an affair built on stolen foundations.

They had no idea that the spotlight illuminating them was about to become an interrogation lamp.
