Chapter 2 - The Architecture of a TrapThe next morning, the Preston Hollow house felt eerily quiet. Ethan had slipped out before dawn, leaving a brief note on the kitchen island reminding me to be ready by six o'clock sharp. I watched him leave from the master bedroom window, noting the pristine cut of his charcoal bespoke suit—a suit I had bought him for our last anniversary.

I spent my morning at the convention center where the gala was being staged, moving through the cavernous ballroom with clipboard in hand, barking quiet, precise orders to my lead technicians. To my staff, I was simply the consummate professional ensuring every centerpiece and spotlight aligned with absolute perfection. Nobody saw the cold, calculated machine ticking beneath my calm exterior.

By mid-afternoon, I finalized the primary layout adjustments. The VIP donor table—historically reserved for the chief cardiologist and his immediate spouse—had undergone a subtle, authorized revision. Instead of seating me directly beside Ethan, the new digital seating manifest placed Dr. Ethan Carter and his distinguished "medical technology partner," Ms. Sophia Bennett, side-by-side at the apex of the central table, perfectly framed by the primary media cameras. And right across from them, in the unobstructed line of sight, sat a very special guest I had personally invited via a confidential midnight email.

Mark Bennett.

It took me less than two hours of private investigation the previous night to confirm what I suspected. Sophia wasn't just an unmarried corporate climber; she was legally married to Mark Bennett, a senior medical malpractice defense attorney whose firm frequently represented the very hospital network Ethan worked for. More importantly, Mark had no idea his wife was currently spending her weekends playing house with a prominent cardiologist in North Dallas.

When Mark answered my phone call at 2:00 AM, his voice groggy and suspicious, I didn't waste time with pleasantries.

“Mr. Bennett, your wife is currently residing in a luxury suite booked under Dr. Ethan Carter’s corporate medical account, and tomorrow night they plan to walk the red carpet together at the Whitestone Gala as professional colleagues. If you want to see the evidence, be at the grand ballroom doors by 7:30 PM.”

The silence on the other end of the line had been absolute, followed by a cold, lethal affirmation. “I’ll be there.”

Back in my dressing room, hours before the event, I unzipped the garment bag containing the emerald silk dress Ethan had specifically requested. I ran my fingers over the luxurious fabric, appreciating the irony. He wanted me to wear his favorite color so I would blend into the background as his compliant prop. Instead, I carefully set it aside and unzipped a second garment bag—one he didn't know existed.

It was a custom-tailored, backless scarlet gown designed by a Parisian atelier, sharp enough to cut glass, commanding enough to eclipse every light in the room. If I was going to preside over the execution of my marriage, I was going to do it wearing armor.
