Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Varenna EmpireBy 2:00 AM, the Varenna penthouse was transformed into a high-security tactical command room.

Outside the private elevator banks, twelve armed private security guards in charcoal suits—led by Luca’s fiercely loyal security chief, Marcus Vance—patrolled the hallways. Inside the sunlit dining room, my mother’s medical records had been permanently cleared, her ongoing treatments fully secured by an independent medical trust established under my maiden name.

I sat at the end of the long mahogany conference table wearing a soft cashmere sweater, holding a mug of warm herbal tea.

Across from me sat Bridget Colton, senior managing partner of Colton & Vance International and our lead corporate counsel, alongside two federal forensic medical auditors.

Luca stood at the head of the table, his shirt sleeves rolled up to his powerful forearms, his severe face glowing under the soft light of the monitors.

Bridget Colton opened three thick leather binders bound with red wax seals, sliding high-definition digital ledgers flat onto the table:

THE FORGED MEDICAL DOSSIER: Forensic analysis proving Dr. Richard Vale was paid $5 million via offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands twelve days after Luca's 2014 surgery.

THE PROXY FRAUD: Bank registries documenting Dominic Varenna using Luca's suppressed voting proxies to divert $140 million from Varenna Maritime Logistics over twelve years.

THE BENNETT MARITIME DEEDS: Original corporate titles proving my late father, Arthur Bennett, had held a twenty-five percent secret co-founding share in the Boston Commercial Berths—equity Dominic had systematically buried to keep my family in poverty!

My breath caught in my throat. I stared at the ledger headers displaying my maiden family's name. "My father... co-founded the berths?"

"Yes, Evelyn," Bridget Colton confirmed, her sharp blue eyes holding profound professional satisfaction. "Dominic didn't just target Luca. When your father died six years ago, Dominic blocked your family's trust distributions, forcing you into medical debt so you could never hire attorneys to audit the maritime registry."

Tears of hot, bitter rage burned behind my eyelids. The desperate shifts, the sold car, the nights spent weeping in hospital corridors... it hadn't been bad luck. It had been a calculated execution by Dominic Varenna to keep the true heiress of the Boston docks from claiming her seat.

Luca walked over to my chair, dropping flat onto one knee flat on the hardwood floor beside me, taking my shaking hand into his broad, warm palm.

"He tried to destroy your father, Evelyn," Luca promised softly, his storm-gray eyes burning with an absolute, iron devotion. "And he tried to make me believe I was hollow inside. Tomorrow morning, we tear his empire down to the dust."
