Chapter 1 - The Twelve-Year ShadowThe heavy oak door of Luca Varenna’s private study closed with a quiet, final click, cutting off the distant murmur of downtown Boston traffic fifty stories below. The room smelled of old leather, polished mahogany, and the faint, woodsy tang of Luca’s expensive cologne. Outside, the night skyline glistened under a light autumn drizzle, but inside, the air was suffocatingly still.

Luca stood beside his heavy carved desk, his tall, broad-shouldered frame outlined against the city lights. His charcoal suit jacket was unbuttoned, his dark hair slightly disheveled, and his storm-gray eyes locked onto mine with an intensity that felt like a physical weight.
In his right hand, he held the faded yellow medical folder he had pulled from his safe—the official diagnostic report from twelve years ago, stamped by Saint Michael's Private Hospital.
"Read it," Luca whispered, his gravelly baritone stripped of its usual razor-sharp composure.
My fingers trembled as I stepped forward, taking the worn paper from his hand. The header bore the crest of Varenna Global Health, a subsidiary controlled by Luca’s uncle, Dominic Varenna, and Luca's former personal physician, Dr. Richard Vale.
My eyes scanned the certified medical text near the bottom:
PATIENT: LUCA VARENNA (AGE 23)
DIAGNOSIS: COMPLETE REPRODUCTIVE STERILITY VIA TRAUMATIC SPERMATIC DUCT LIGATION
PROGNOSIS: IRREVERSIBLE / ZERO VIABLE SPERM COUNT
AUTHORIZED BY: DR. RICHARD VALE / GUARDIAN PROXY: DOMINIC VARENNA
I looked up, my hazel eyes meeting Luca's pale, rigid face. "Dominic... and Dr. Vale?"
"Twelve years ago," Luca spoke, every word dropping into the quiet room like a block of iron, "my father was assassinated outside our harbor estate. I was twenty-three. Three days later, I was ambushed near the docks and suffered severe abdominal trauma. Uncle Dominic took me to his private clinic. Dr. Vale performed the emergency surgery."
He walked to the window, his large hands clenching into tight fists at his sides.
"When I woke up," Luca continued, his voice dropping into a lethal, subsonic register, "Dominic sat beside my bed with tears in his eyes. He told me the surgery had saved my life, but that I could never father an heir. Under our family’s charter, a leader who cannot produce a biological heir must surrender fifty percent of his executive voting proxies to the elders... to Dominic."
A cold, sickening shockwave rippled through my chest. The nauseating truth connected in my mind with terrifying clarity.
"They didn't just diagnose you, Luca," I breathed, stepping up behind him, resting my small hand tentatively against his broad back. "They lied to you. They gave you a fake diagnosis to lock your proxies under Dominic's control."
Luca whirled around, his storm-gray eyes burning with a dark, terrifying fire that made my heart leap—not with fear of him, but with a sudden, fierce realization of the storm about to break over Boston.
"You're pregnant, Evelyn," Luca murmured, his voice softening with an intense, staggering reverence as his large, calloused hand reached down to cover mine over my stomach. "You're carrying my child. And that means for twelve years, my uncle didn't just steal my legacy..."

He pulled me flush against his solid six-foot-three frame, his chest heaving as he rested his forehead against mine.
"...he stole my right to believe I could have a family with the woman I love."
