Chapter 6 - The True Partnership

Three months later, the legal battles were winding down, and the federal courts had begun dismantling the remnants of Sterling Global, redistributing its ill-gotten assets to victims' funds and public trusts.

Claire and I stood on the sunlit wooden deck of a modest, beautiful coastal home overlooking the crashing waves of the Pacific Northwest. There were no armed guards, no high-society gala invitations, and no corporate boardrooms demanding my soul.

The wind whipped through Claire’s dark hair as she leaned against the wooden railing, holding a steaming mug of coffee.

I walked up behind her, wrapping my arms around her waist and resting my chin on her shoulder.

"You know," I murmured into her ear, "technically, our one-year contract is still legally binding."

Claire turned in my arms, a playful, radiant smile lighting up her face—the same smile that had first caught my eye in that downtown Chicago café, though now it carried the warmth of a woman who had finally found her peace.

"Is that so?" she teased, raising an eyebrow. "And what does the contract say about renewal terms?"

"It says the groom is permanently disqualified from ever leaving," I whispered, pulling her close. "And that the bride is required to stay by his side forever, whether she likes it or not."

Claire laughed, wrapping her arms around my neck and pulling me down into a deep, unhurried kiss that tasted like salt air, morning coffee, and a future entirely of our own making.

We hadn't started with romance. We had started with a desperate lie, a fake wedding, and a hidden silver ring. But as I held my wife against the backdrop of the endless ocean, I knew that no matter what storms lay ahead, we were finally, truly invincible.
