Chapter 3 - The Escape

"We have to go—now!" Claire commanded, grabbing my arm and hauling me toward the master walk-in closet.
"Wait, my phone, my keys, my wallet—"
"None of that matters anymore. Your father owns every cell tower, every bank account, and every satellite link tied to your name. The moment we use your credit card or phone, a missile will find us before midnight."
She thrust open the back panel of the walk-in closet, revealing not clothes, but a heavy steel maintenance ladder leading straight down into darkness.
"How did you—?"
"I told you, Julian. I spent three years mapping every property your family owns. This estate was built in 1994 by your grandfather as a panic shelter during the Cold War. There's a drainage tunnel that exits half a mile away near the creek bed."
Without waiting for me to argue, Claire scrambled down the ladder with practiced ease, her wedding dress hiked up to her knees, her tactical holster securely strapped to her thigh. I swallowed my panic, gripped the cold rungs of the ladder, and followed her down into the subterranean dampness of the escape tunnel.
As we scrambled through the concrete conduit, a dull, concussive roar shook the earth beneath our feet. A brilliant flash of orange light illuminated the far end of the tunnel.
"They triggered the thermite charges," Claire panted, breaking into a sprint through the ankle-deep water pooling in the drainage pipe. "Move, Julian! Move!"
We burst out from the overgrown brush near the creek bed just as the main wing of the Sterling estate erupted in a sheet of white-hot flame. The massive stone mansion where I had grown up, where my father had ruled with an iron fist, was rapidly being consumed by an inferno of our own family's making.
We collapsed behind a thick stand of weeping willows, catching our breath in the freezing night air. I stared at the burning wreckage, the reality of my new life crashing down on me with crushing weight. I had no money, no home, no identity, and my own father had just tried to incinerate me.
"Well," I muttered bitterly, wiping soot from my forehead. "So much for a one-year fake marriage."
Claire let out a sharp, unexpected laugh—a sound that was half-exhaustion, half-hysteria. She reached into her pocket, pulled out the encrypted radio she had taken from the tactical operative, and tossed it into my lap.
"We aren't running away, Julian," she said, her voice hardening into steel as she stared at the burning ruins of my family's empire. "We're going on the offensive."
"With what?" I asked incredulously. "My father has billions of dollars, an army of mercenaries, and the entire corporate establishment in his pocket. We have nothing."
"Nothng?" Claire smiled, a fierce, brilliant expression that made me realize I had never truly known the woman I married. "Your father thinks he burned all his dirty secrets in that mansion. But while he was busy planning our execution, I transferred every single offshore ledger, every shell company routing number, and every piece of incriminating federal evidence from his primary mainframe into a secure, decentralized dead-man's switch programmed to release to every major news outlet and federal prosecutor at dawn."

She stood up, dusting off her ruined wedding dress, and extended a gloved hand down toward me.
"So, Mr. Sterling," she whispered, her eyes dancing with dangerous excitement. "Do you want to help me take down your father, or do you want to keep hiding in the bushes?"
