Chapter 2 - The Breach

The sound of splintering oak echoed from downstairs as the heavy front door was kicked off its hinges.
My instincts, honed by years of luxury and complacency, screamed at me to run, but my limbs felt weighted down by lead. Claire didn't hesitate. In one fluid motion, she darted across the bedroom, slammed the heavy oak door shut, and threw the iron deadbolt.
"Get away from the windows!" she hissed, grabbing me by the collar of my tuxedo shirt and hauling me down behind the heavy mahogany bed frame.
"Who—who is that?" I whispered, my heart slamming against my ribs like a trapped bird.
"Sterling’s cleanup crew," Claire replied, her voice dangerously steady as she pulled a compact, suppressed 9mm pistol from a hidden holster strapped securely against her thigh beneath her wedding gown. "They aren't here to negotiate your prenup, Julian. When your father realized you married a woman he couldn't vet, he ran facial recognition on our marriage certificate. He knows who I am. And he knows that if I have that ring, I have the leverage to tear his entire global empire down to ash."
Heavy footsteps pounded up the stairs, moving with ruthless, military efficiency. They didn't knock. They didn't announce themselves.
Bang.
A high-caliber round tore straight through the wooden bedroom door, missing my head by inches and splintering the headboard into a cloud of white dust.
"Claire!" I yelled, pulling my knees to my chest.
"Shut up and stay down!" she barked, sliding across the hardwood floor toward the en-suite bathroom door.
Another round pierced the door, followed by the heavy thud of a shoulder slamming against the frame. The deadbolt groaned, the wood splintering outward. Two men dressed in unmarked black tactical gear, wearing night-vision goggles and carrying submachine guns, poured into the bedroom.
They swept the room with military precision, their laser sights painting the walls in eerie crimson lines.
"Target is clear of the bed," the lead operative growled into his shoulder comm. "Searching perimeter—"
He didn't finish the sentence.
Claire stepped out from the shadows of the bathroom doorway. With terrifying speed, she fired twice. The lead operative dropped instantly, a clean entry wound through his tactical vest. The second operative spun around, raising his weapon, but Claire was already sliding across the floor beneath his line of fire, driving her heel hard into his knee joint with a sickening crack. As he collapsed, she brought the butt of her pistol down hard against his helmet, sending him sprawling into unconsciousness.
Silence descended on the room once more, broken only by my own ragged breathing.
I sat up slowly, staring at the two unconscious men in black gear sprawled across our wedding night rug. My brain refused to bridge the gap between the sweet girl who had poured my coffee in Chicago and the lethal operative standing before me.
"You... you just shot two men," I whispered, staring at the smoking barrel of her gun.
"I saved your life," Claire corrected sharply, holstering her weapon and walking over to the dead man to strip him of his encrypted tactical radio. She pressed a button on the side and listened intently to the static-filled chatter coming through the earpiece.
"What are they saying?" I asked, my voice trembling.

Claire’s face went pale as she listened to the dispatcher’s voice echoing through the small speaker: “Alpha Team, report. If the target and the girl are neutralized, initiate Protocol Phoenix on the estate. Burn it to the ground. Leave no trace.”
She looked up at me, her eyes wide with sudden urgency. "Protocol Phoenix means they’re deploying incendiary thermite charges around the perimeter. Your father just ordered our execution, Julian. Which means if we stay in this house for two more minutes, we’re going to burn alive."
