Chapter 4 - The Drake Hotel BallThe crystal chandeliers of the Grand Ballroom at the Drake Hotel blazed with blinding brilliance, casting reflections across the marble floors where Chicago’s elite mingled in custom tuxedos and glittering diamond jewelry.

When the mahogany doors swung open and Alexander Sterling stepped inside, arm in arm with his new bride, a sudden, heavy hush fell over the room.
All eyes converged on Claire. She wore the emerald silk gown that hugged her elegant frame with quiet, effortless grace. She didn't look like a woman intimidated by the sea of judgmental aristocrats who had spent years looking down on anyone without a billionaire pedigree; she walked with the poise and calm detachment of an absolute queen.
Arthur Sterling stood near the dais, flanked by his impeccably dressed wife, Eleanor. Arthur’s face was a mask of cold, controlled fury. He had spent the last month trying to annul his son’s rebellious marriage, only to find every legal avenue blocked by airtight prenuptial clauses Alexander had secretly filed.
Arthur strode across the floor, his sharp eyes narrowing as he stopped inches away from the young couple.
"Alexander," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a low, menacing hiss that only they could hear. "Bringing a common waitress into a room full of people who control your future is a pathetic display of rebellion. I give this marriage three months before you crawl back asking for my bailout."
Alexander didn't flinch. He tightened his grip on Claire’s hand, feeling her steady pulse against his palm.
"You might want to reconsider your timeline, Father," Alexander replied smoothly, a cool, confident smile playing on his lips. "Because Claire isn't just my wife. She’s the best thing that ever happened to this family. And you’d be surprised by how quickly fortunes can change."
Arthur’s eyes flashed with sudden, uneasy suspicion. He looked at Claire, trying to read past her serene expression, but found only an impenetrable wall.
"Enjoy your little party," Arthur muttered, turning sharply on his heel. "Because tomorrow morning, the board votes on the restructuring of the Sterling trust, and your allowance is officially cut to zero."
As Arthur melted back into the crowd of wealthy sycophants, Claire leaned subtly toward Alexander’s ear.
"He’s executing the trust restructuring tonight at midnight from his private study in the Lake Forest estate," she whispered, her lips barely moving. "The system is vulnerable right now. While your parents are here playing host, I’m slipping out the side exit."
Alexander’s heart skipped a beat. "Be careful, Claire. If my father’s security team catches you—"

"They won't catch me," she interrupted, pressing a quick, fierce kiss to his cheek before seamlessly blending into a cluster of socialites near the eastern exit.
Alexander took a glass of champagne from a passing waiter, turned to face the room, and raised his glass with a brilliant, mocking smile, ready to play his part in the most dangerous game of his life.
