Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the ArchivesThe digital clock on the bedside table read 3:15 AM, but neither Alexander nor Claire had slept. They sat across from each other at the sleek glass kitchen island, the broken pocket watch resting between them like a ticking time bomb.

Over the last few hours, Claire had laid out a timeline of horrors that shattered every illusion Alexander had ever held about his family name. Her adoptive mother had been a nurse at Lake Forest Memorial Hospital twenty-five years ago—the same nurse Arthur Sterling had bribed to smuggle infant Julian out of the burn unit before the fire crews arrived, paying her to raise the sickly child in quiet obscurity on the far south side of Chicago while telling the world he had perished in the flames.
"Why didn't my mother ever look for him?" Alexander asked, his voice hollow as he stared into his cold coffee. "Surely she knew."
"Your mother, Eleanor Sterling, was just as terrified of your father as everyone else in that household," Claire replied, sliding a yellowed hospital discharge slip across the counter. "She tried to keep tabs on me through a trusted family lawyer when I turned eighteen. But three days before she could meet me, that lawyer died of a sudden, convenient stroke."
Alexander’s fists clenched so hard his knuckles turned white. "Arthur. He covered his tracks at every single turn."
"Which is why we can't go to the police," Claire said firmly. "Not yet. Your father controls half the municipal judges and district attorneys in Cook County. If we walk into a precinct with a rusted pocket watch and a forged hospital slip, his legal team will have us locked away in a psychiatric facility before breakfast."
"Then what do we do?" Alexander asked, looking at her with a fierce, burning respect he hadn't felt for anyone in his entire life. The waitress from the downtown café was gone; sitting across from him was a brilliant, hardened strategist who had spent years preparing for a war he didn't even know he was fighting.
"We play his game," Claire said, a cold, calculated smile touching her lips. "Tomorrow is your parents' annual charity gala at the Drake Hotel. Every major investor, board member, and high-society socialite your father tried to force you to marry will be in attendance."
Alexander raised an eyebrow. "You want to make our public debut?"
"I want to make an entrance they will never forget," Claire corrected, standing up and sliding the pocket watch back into her purse. "You introduced me to your family and friends as an ordinary waitress you fell in love with at first sight. Tomorrow night, we let them believe we're just a cute, naive young couple playing at high society."
She walked over to the hallway closet, pulling out a sleek, designer garment bag that had been delivered anonymously earlier that afternoon—a breathtaking, floor-length emerald silk gown custom-fitted with a hidden data drive sewn into the lining.
"And while your father is busy parading us around the ballroom to prove to the board that his rebellious son has finally settled down," Claire whispered, "I’m going to use my administrator access to hack into the private terminal in his home office."

Alexander stared at her, a thrill of adrenaline surging through his veins. "What’s on that terminal?"
"The digital ledger of the Sterling Heritage Trust," Claire said, her eyes flashing with a lethal intensity. "Every illegal offshore account, every corporate bribe, and the original unredacted adoption papers proving that Julian Sterling never died."
