Chapter 6 - The Trap is Set

By 7:00 p.m., I was back in the control room at Aegis Systems with Marcus and my senior legal counsel, Eleanor Vance—a sharp, uncompromising trial attorney who was unrelated to my family, but who possessed the legal ferocity of a dragon.
"This is unprecedented," Eleanor said, sifting through the medical records from Framingham, the wire transfer logs, and the audio files from Stephanie's USB drive. "Calvin has committed federal wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, extortion, and conspiracy to obstruct justice regarding your father's false death certificate."
"Can we put him away?" I asked, standing by the glass window, watching the rain wash down over Boston.
"Put him away?" Eleanor let out a cold, dark chuckle. "Brooke, with this evidence, Calvin Vance will be spending the next fifteen to twenty years in a federal penitentiary. But we have to execute this perfectly. If he realizes we have Arthur, he might try to move him or destroy the records."
"He won't get the chance," I said, turning around. "Marcus, have you prepped the security team?"
"A private medical transport team is on their way to Framingham right now," Marcus confirmed, typing rapidly on his terminal. "Your father is being safely transferred to a top-tier private neurological facility in Vermont under an assumed name with twenty-four-hour private security. By 8:00 p.m., he will be entirely out of Calvin's reach."
"Good," I said. "Now let's invite Calvin to his grand finale."
At 8:15 p.m., Calvin stepped into the main executive boardroom of Aegis Systems. He was wearing a fresh suit, holding a leather briefcase, flanked by a high-priced divorce attorney named Arthur Sterling.
Calvin looked confident, his posture arrogant, believing he held all the cards.
"Brooke," Calvin said, taking a seat at the long mahogany conference table. "I'm glad you came to your senses. We don't need to make this messier than it already is."
His attorney, Sterling, opened a thick leather binder. "Mrs. Vance, my client is prepared to execute a quiet separation agreement. In exchange for fifty percent of your equity in Aegis Systems and a lump-sum payment of five million dollars, Mr. Vance will agree to sign a non-disclosure agreement regarding your personal... domestic matters."
I sat at the head of the table, flanked by Eleanor and Marcus. I hadn't brought a single piece of paper. I just sat there, my hands clasped, watching Calvin with an expression of quiet, serene calm.
"Fifty percent equity and five million dollars," I repeated slowly. "That's quite a steep price for a man who was caught in my bed with another woman."
Calvin smirked, leaning back in his chair. "We both know morals don't matter in a court of law, Brooke. Assets acquired during marriage are subject to equal division. Plus... I think we both know there are certain family secrets that would severely damage Aegis Systems' upcoming IPO if they were to become public knowledge."
He was referencing my father. He was using his ultimate threat, assuming I was still terrified, still completely in the dark.
"Family secrets?" I asked, leaning forward, resting my chin on my hands. "You mean like the fact that your father, Richard Vance, bribed a county coroner seven years ago to fake my father's death certificate to cover up structural fraud on state bridges?"
Calvin’s smirk instantly vanished.
His attorney frowned, looking at Calvin. "What is she talking about?"
"Or perhaps," I continued, my voice calm and razor-sharp, "you're referring to the fact that you've been embezzling four thousand five hundred dollars a month from this company to keep my father hidden in a small house in Framingham, using his extortion as a weapon against me?"
Calvin’s face turned an eerie, translucent white. "Brooke... you... you don't know what—"
"I know everything, Calvin," I said, tapping the table.
Marcus pressed a button on his tablet. The massive digital screen on the boardroom wall lit up.
First, it displayed the complete forensic audit showing Calvin's monthly wire transfers to account 8804.
Next, it played an audio recording from Stephanie's flash drive, where Calvin's clear, recognizable voice stated: "Once I trigger the divorce through the affair with Stephanie, Brooke will be forced to give me half the firm to keep her father's survival a secret."
Finally, the screen shifted to a live camera feed showing a luxury medical transport van pulling into a private, secure facility in Vermont. The camera showed my father, wrapped in warm blankets, being gently wheeled inside by expert doctors.
Calvin stared at the wall screen, his mouth agape, his eyes bulging in utter, paralyzed horror.
"Your insurance policy is gone, Calvin," I whispered, leaning across the table. "My father is safe. Your blackmail is recorded. And your fraud is fully documented."
"This... this is a setup!" Calvin shrieked, springing out of his chair, turning to his lawyer. "Sterling, do something!"
Sterling closed his leather binder, stood up, and took a step away from Calvin, looking at him with disgust. "Mr. Vance, as of this moment, I am withdrawing as your counsel. Good luck."
Before Calvin could even take another breath, the double doors of the boardroom swung open.
Four uniformed officers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, accompanied by state detectives, walked into the room.
"Calvin Vance?" the lead federal agent asked, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs.
Calvin stumbled backward against the glass window, looking frantically around the room like a trapped animal. "Brooke! Brooke, please! Talk to them! We're married! We can fix this!"
"You're under arrest for federal wire fraud, extortion, corporate theft, and conspiracy," the agent said, grabbing Calvin’s arms and pinning him against the glass.
The sharp click of the handcuffs echoed through the silent boardroom.
I stood up slowly, stepping close to Calvin as the agents prepared to lead him away. I looked him dead in the eye—the man who had sought to destroy my life, my family, and my legacy.
"You told me last night that if I left you, I shouldn't expect to walk away with everything," I said, my voice cold, triumphant, and completely steady. "You were right. I'm walking away with something much better."
May you like
"What?" Calvin wept, his spirit completely broken as he was yanked toward the door.
"My father," I said. "And my freedom."
