Chapter 2 - The Confrontation at Aegis

By 8:00 a.m., I walked into the glass tower of Aegis Systems in downtown Boston. I was wearing a sharp, tailored ivory suit, my dark hair pulled back into a sleek, unforgiving ponytail. I had put on ruby-red lipstick—a shield against the world—and dark sunglasses to hide the shadows beneath my eyes.

The glass doors slid open, and the receptionist greeted me warmly. "Good morning, Mrs. Vance."

"It's Brooke," I corrected smoothly, not slowing my stride. "Assemble the executive board in Main Conference Room B for a 9:00 a.m. emergency meeting."

"Is... is Mr. Vance coming?" she asked nervously.

"He'll be here," I said softly.

I walked into my corner office, overlooking the skyline. Five minutes later, the door swung open without a knock.

Calvin walked in. He was wearing a dark grey suit, but he looked terrible. His eyes were bloodshot, his tie slightly crooked, his jaw tight with anger and desperation. He slammed the heavy oak door shut behind him.

"You changed the locks on the apartment," he snapped, keeping his voice in a forced whisper. "I went down to grab my gym bag this morning and my keycard wouldn't work."

I sat behind my mahogany desk, resting my chin on my laced fingers. "It's my apartment, Calvin. My name is on the lease. The deed was purchased through my pre-marital trust. You were a guest."

"I am your husband!" he raised his voice, stepping closer to the desk. "You think you can just lock me out? You think you can dismiss six months of my life because you walked in unannounced?"

"Unannounced?" I let out a dry, chilling laugh. "In my own home? Where you were having my best friend against the kitchen counter?"

Calvin’s face flushed red, a mixture of shame and fury. "Stephanie gives me something you haven't given me in five years, Brooke! She looks at me like a man! You look at me like an employee! Every time I walk into this building, everyone knows it's your company! I'm just the guy who married the founder!"

"You are an employee, Calvin," I said, leaning forward. "And as of 8:30 this morning, your corporate access has been revoked. Your company card is canceled. Your executive email is suspended."

"You can't do that!" he shouted, slamming his palm on my desk. "I'm the CMO! I hold ten percent equity!"

"Ten percent equity that is contingent upon your continued employment under Section 12 of your founder's agreement," I said smoothly, opening a blue folder. "Which can be terminated immediately by a two-thirds board vote in the event of gross misconduct or breach of fiduciary duty."

Calvin snorted. "Breach of fiduciary duty? Cheating on you isn't illegal, Brooke. Unfaithful husbands don't get fired for cause. Try telling the board you're kicking me out because I slept with Stephanie. They'll call it a personal matter."

"I'm not firing you because you slept with Stephanie, Calvin," I said quietly, pulling a printed piece of paper from the folder and sliding it across the polished wood.

The piece of paper sat between us.

Calvin looked down at it. As his eyes caught the top line—Arthur Vance, Account 8804—every single drop of blood drained from his face. His skin turned a sickening, waxy gray. His mouth opened slightly, but no sound came out.

"Who is Arthur Vance?" I asked, my voice dropping an octave, soft and lethal.

Calvin swallowed hard, his throat working frantically. "Brooke... that's... that's your father."

"My father died seven years ago, Calvin," I said, standing up slowly and placing my hands flat on the desk, towering over him. "I buried him. So why have you been wiring four thousand five hundred dollars a month of my company's money to his account for two and a half years?"

"It's... it's a private investment," Calvin stuttered, his earlier arrogance completely evaporating. "An estate trust. For your mother—"

"My mother died three years ago!" I slammed my hand down so hard the glass water pitcher rattled. "Don't lie to me! Who is receiving that money, Calvin? Tell me right now, or I swear to God I walk out into that hallway, call the FBI financial crimes unit, and have you led out of this building in handcuffs for corporate embezzlement!"

May you like

Calvin fell back into the leather chair, trembling. He looked completely defeated, a pathetic shadow of the confident man who had stood in my apartment twelve hours ago.

"You don't know what you're asking, Brooke," he whispered, his eyes wide with genuine terror. "If I stop sending that money... if they find out you know... they won't just ruin me. They will destroy you."
