Chapter 4 - The Forgotten Father

The interior of the house smelled of cedar, lavender, and antiseptic. It was dark, the curtains drawn tight against the afternoon sun.
I followed the woman down a narrow hallway lined with small framed paintings—watercolors of bridges and landscapes. I recognized the brushstrokes instantly. They were my father's.
She opened the door at the end of the hall.
Inside sat a small medical bed, surrounded by heart monitors, oxygen tanks, and IV stands.
Lying in the bed was an old man. His hair was completely white, thin and wispy. His skin was pale, paper-thin, transparent enough to see the blue veins underneath. He was hooked up to a breathing tube, his eyes staring blankly at the ceiling.
I stopped in the doorway. My hands began to shake violently.
I moved closer, step by agonizing step, until I was standing right beside the mattress. I looked at his hands—the long, elegant fingers that had played the piano, the slight scar on his left thumb from a woodworking tool.
It was him.
My father.
He wasn't dead. He was alive, lying in a makeshift medical room in a suburb thirty minutes from my home.
"Dad?" I whispered, my voice breaking into a sob.
The old man’s eyes slowly turned toward me. A faint, clouded light flickered in his grey irises, but there was no recognition. He blinked slowly, letting out a rasping breath through the machine.
"He has advanced early-onset Alzheimer's and vascular dementia," the woman said softly, standing behind me. "He hasn't recognized anyone in four years, Brooke."
I turned to her, my cheeks soaked with tears, my mind a chaotic storm of horror, rage, and confusion. "How is this possible? I was at his funeral! I identified the body! I saw his casket buried!"
"You saw a closed casket, Brooke," the woman said quietly. "My name is Sarah. I was your father's private nurse seven years ago."
She walked over to a small desk, pulled out an old leather binder, and handed it to me.
"Seven years ago, your father was involved in a massive financial conspiracy," Sarah explained, her voice heavy with grief. "He was a senior inspector for the state bridge authority. He discovered that a major construction firm was using substandard, dangerous materials on three multi-million-dollar public bridges, falsifying safety reports."
"Who was the construction firm?" I asked, my blood running cold.
"Morgan & Associates," Sarah said. "Owned by Calvin’s father, Richard Vance."
I gasped.
"Your father went to Richard Vance to expose the corruption," Sarah continued. "Instead of fixing it, Richard threatened to ruin your father, frame him for accepting bribes, and ensure you—who were just starting your software company at twenty-three—were dragged into a public scandal that would ruin your career before it ever began."
I clutched the edge of the bed, feeling sick to my stomach.
"Arthur panicked," Sarah whispered. "The stress was so severe he suffered a massive stroke behind the wheel on Route 9. He crashed. He didn't die, but his brain was severely damaged. Richard Vance saw an opportunity. He used his connections with a corrupt county coroner to fake Arthur's death certificate, buried a nameless body in your father's grave, and hid Arthur away in a private facility to keep him quiet forever."
"And Calvin?" I demanded, my voice rising in fury. "How does Calvin fit into this horrific nightmare?"
"Calvin found out three years ago," Sarah said, looking at me with deep sorrow. "When his father died, Calvin inherited the family books. He found out your father was alive, kept in a private nursing home. Instead of coming to you, instead of getting your father proper care... Calvin used it."

"He used it to control me," I realized, the horror dawning on me.
"He threatened to expose the whole fake-death fraud to the authorities, framing you for tax evasion and estate fraud if your father's medical bills weren't quietly paid from your firm's accounts," Sarah said. "Calvin kept your father hidden as an insurance policy. If you ever tried to leave him, if you ever tried to divorce him... he was going to use this secret to burn your life to the ground."
