Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Hidden TrapBy 8:00 PM that evening, the grand private executive suite at The Charleston Harbor Resort was operating under an impenetrable, non-negotiable tactical lockdown.

Outside the double mahogany entrance doors, six Vance Security operators in dark charcoal suits stood guard. Inside, fourteen-month-old Leo was fast asleep in a plush portable crib in the adjoining bedroom, while my orange cat, Pumpkin, purred softly beside his blanket.

In the central oceanfront study, sitting around a broad black granite table, were me, Alexander Moretti, Bridget Colton, and two federal forensic accounting experts.

Bridget Colton opened three heavy, red-sealed leather binders, sliding digital ledgers and wiretap transcripts flat onto the granite table before Alexander and me:

"Claire, Don Moretti," Bridget spoke crisp and fast, her sharp blue eyes holding surgical professional fury. "The forensic audit into Julian Reynolds, Sophia Reynolds, and their fraudulent extortion scheme is complete."

I sat in a high-backed leather chair, wearing a clean wool sweater, holding a mug of warm chamomile tea. Alexander stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the stormy Atlantic Ocean, his jacket off, his sleeves rolled up to reveal his dark, intricate tattoos, his face carved from unyielding granite.

Bridget tapped the digital displays:

THE FORGED CUSTODY INJUNCTION: Certified court records from Cook County proving Julian Reynolds paid $500,000 to a corrupt probate clerk to create a fake arrest warrant for Claire Bennett, aiming to seize infant Leo to force Alexander into a $50 million trust payout.

THE THIRTY-MILLION-DOLLAR EMBEZZLEMENT: Intercepted banking registries documenting Julian Reynolds systematically embezzling $30 million from the Moretti Real Estate Trust over three years while framing Claire’s small ceramics entity for the tax liabilities.

THE SOVEREIGN CERAMICS TRUST: Original corporate deeds confirming thirty-two-year-old Claire Bennett-Moretti as sole sixty percent controlling common equity holder over the entire Moretti Heritage Maritime & Arts Foundation upon asserting her spousal trust rights.

My hands tightened around my teacup until my knuckles turned stark white.

"They didn't just try to break our marriage two years ago," I rasped out, my hazel eyes burning with an unshakeable, diamond-hard clarity. "Julian Reynolds used my disappearance to steal from Alexander’s empire, and then tried to steal my son when he realized I was alive!"

Alexander walked across the room, dropping flat onto one knee right in front of my chair.

The feared Don who commanded Chicago’s underworld reached out, taking my small, clay-calloused hands into his broad, warm palms, pressing his lips gently against my knuckles.

"They used my silence and your pain to build their lies, Claire," Alexander swore, his storm-gray eyes burning with pure, eternal devotion and absolute, protective rage. "They thought a quiet ceramic artist had no teeth. Tomorrow morning at the Charleston Federal Assembly... we show them who rules this empire."
