Chapter 5 - The Terms of SurrenderThe silence in the small archive room was heavy enough to suffocate. Outside, a passing car splashed water against the library windows, breaking the tension that crackled between them.

Lena stood frozen, her hands resting protectively over her swollen belly. She had imagined this moment a hundred times during her lonely nights in Millfield—she had rehearsed screaming at him, throwing books at his head, or turning her back and walking out of the building without a word.
Yet, hearing Dante Moretti—the most feared man in the Midwest—admitting defeat stripped away her defensive anger, leaving behind a raw, vulnerable ache.
"You broke our vows, Dante," Lena said, her voice barely louder than a whisper, but carrying the weight of five years of invisible heartbreak. "You let another woman stand in your office, touch your chest, and kiss you while your wife was baking dinners and waiting at home. You told me I was crazy for noticing. You made me feel like my intuition was a disease."
Dante closed his eyes, his head bowing as if he were taking a physical blow with every word. "I know," he murmured, his voice thick with shame. "I was arrogant. I believed that because I provided the world, the money, and the protection, I was invincible. I thought loyalty was something I could take for granted. I didn't realize that while I was building an empire, I was losing the only person who truly loved me for who I was, not what I owned."
He opened his eyes, taking another slow step forward until he was standing just an arm's length away. He didn't try to touch her. He respected the invisible boundary she had drawn.
"Sofia is gone," Dante said flatly. "Her family’s shipping contracts with Duca Holdings were terminated the morning after you left. She was exiled to Europe within forty-eight hours, and her name hasn't crossed my desk since. I burned down every bridge, every association, and every distraction that ever threatened our peace. I restructured the entire organization so that no one outside my most trusted inner circle even knows I have a family."
Lena looked up into his gray eyes, searching for the old arrogance, the cold calculation, she had lived with for years. She found none. There was only a profound, desperate devotion.
"I'm having twins, Dante," Lena said softly, dropping her guard just enough to let the truth hit him.
Dante’s breath caught. He stared at her stomach, his eyes widening as the full magnitude of her words registered. "Twins..." he whispered, a tremor running through his deep voice. "Two..."
"A boy and a girl," Lena continued, her voice steadying. "And I refuse to let them grow up in a world where their father is married to his empire and leaves his wife invisible in the shadows."
"They won't," Dante vowed fiercely, stepping closer until she could feel the warmth radiating from him. "Neither will you. I am stepping down as active head of Duca Holdings next month. Marco is taking over daily operations. I am moving my investments into legitimate, transparent global infrastructure funds. I am trading the underworld for a normal life—our life. Right here, or wherever you want us to be."
Lena studied his face for a long, quiet moment. The man who commanded Chicago was offering to burn his kingdom to the ground just to earn her forgiveness.
"I'm not coming back to the penthouse, Dante," Lena said clearly. "I like my life here. I like my independence, my job at the library, and the peace of this town."
May you like
Dante didn't hesitate for a single second. "Then I'm renting the house next door. Or building one down the street. I will commute, I will chop wood, I will learn how to cook, and I will stand outside your door every single day until you decide I am worthy of walking back into your life."
Lena looked at him, feeling the hard armor around her heart finally give way to something warm, terrifying, and undeniably real.
