Chapter 4 - The Confrontation in the Archive RoomThe door swung open, and the afternoon sunlight spilled across the hardwood floor, casting a long, imposing shadow into the room.

It wasn't Dante.

Standing in the doorway, dressed in a tailored charcoal suit that looked entirely out of place among the dusty bookshelves of a small-town library, was Marco Vitale. His sharp eyes scanned the room instantly, locking onto Lena where she stood frozen beside the tall archival shelves.

Marco stopped dead in his tracks. He didn't pull a weapon, nor did he rush forward. Instead, his fierce, hard expression softened into something resembling profound relief mixed with deep apprehension.

"Mrs. Moretti," Marco said quietly, keeping his hands visible and empty as he stepped into the room. "Thank God."

Lena’s heart slammed against her ribs like a trapped bird, but survival instinct kept her voice steady and sharp. "How did you find me, Marco? Did Dante send you to drag me back to Chicago?"

"No, ma'am," Marco replied, holding his ground respectfully a few feet away. He glanced down at her visibly rounded stomach, his eyes widening slightly as the realization hit him. "Boss didn't know you were carrying twins. None of us did until recently. When he found out... Lena, you have no idea what he's been through."

"I don't care," Lena cut him off, her voice trembling with rising anger and fear. "I don't care if he’s torn his hair out or burned his entire empire to the ground. He chose Sofia. He chose his lies. And I chose my freedom. You tell Dante that if he comes anywhere near me, I will fight him in every court in this country until I am bankrupt and broken."

"He’s not going to fight you in court, Lena," a deep, gravelly voice echoed from the doorway behind Marco.

The air in the small room seemed to vanish. Marco stepped aside, and Dante Moretti walked into the archive room.

He looked older, leaner, and dangerously exhausted. The immaculate, untouchable mafia boss of Chicago was gone, replaced by a man whose eyes were haunted by months of sleepless nights and absolute despair. He wore a simple dark wool coat, unbuttoned, his tie slightly loosened, looking as though he had driven straight through the night without stopping.

Lena stepped back until her spine hit the heavy wooden bookshelf. "Stay back, Dante," she warned, her voice shaking despite her best efforts to sound brave. "Don't take another step."

Dante stopped immediately. He raised both hands, palms open, showing he carried no threat. His gaze dropped slowly to her stomach, and for a second, his breath hitched. The formidable king of the underworld looked as though he might shatter into a million pieces right there on the dusty floor.

"I won't touch you, Lena," Dante said, his voice raw, rough, and entirely stripped of its usual command. "I drove twelve hours straight from Chicago because Marco called me the second he saw you. But I didn't come here to drag you back. I came here... because I needed to look at you with my own eyes and know you were safe."

Lena stared at him, suspicion warring with the overwhelming shock of his presence. "You found me in a tiny town in Ohio within four months. You could have taken us back anytime you wanted. Why didn't you?"

Dante swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing as he struggled to find the words. "Because the night you walked out of my office, you told me that I had already ended our marriage. You told me some truths that took me months to fully digest. If I hunted you down like a fugitive and dragged you back into my cage, I would only be proving every single thing you feared about me."

He took one slow, agonizingly cautious step closer.

"I didn't come to take you back, Lena," Dante repeated, his voice cracking with quiet agony. "I came to beg for a second chance. And if you tell me to turn around and walk away forever... I will do it. Even if it kills me."
