Chapter 7 - Dawn Over the Hudson

Six months later, the spring sun bathed the sprawling green lawns and blossoming cherry orchards of the Hayes estate in brilliant, golden warmth.
The heavy iron security gates remained—because the world outside was still complex and dangerous—but inside the courtyard, the atmosphere was one of absolute, untamed joy.
On a large quilted blanket spread across the emerald grass, nine-month-old Lily was laughing hysterically as she tried to crawl away from her father, her tiny hands grasping at the grass while Dominic scooped her up into the air with a booming laugh that echoed across the estate.
Elena sat nearby on a teakwood bench, watching them with a cup of fresh coffee in her hands, a radiant, genuine smile gracing her lips. The heavy, suffocating grief that had drowned her world a year ago had finally transformed into a soft, enduring peace. She still remembered David and her twins every single day, keeping their memories alive in a quiet corner of her heart. But her arms—and her home—were full again.
Dominic handed a giggling Lily to Mrs. Gable, who was waiting nearby with a stroller for the baby's morning nap, before walking across the lawn toward Elena.
He wore a casual linen shirt and dark trousers, his rolled-up sleeves revealing the tattoos that had once seemed so intimidating, but now represented the armor that kept their family safe.
He sat down beside her on the bench, pulling her close against his side, resting his chin on top of her head as they watched the Hudson River sparkle in the distance.
"You’re awfully quiet this morning," Dominic murmured, kissing the crown of her hair.
"I was just thinking about that airplane," Elena smiled, turning to look up into his dark, devoted eyes. "If my original flight hadn't been cancelled... if I had gone to London like I planned... I never would have met you."
"And I would have spent the rest of my life searching for the woman who was meant to complete my family," Dominic replied, his voice dropping into a fierce, unwavering register. "You saved my daughter’s life, Elena. But you saved mine, too."
May you like
Elena leaned her head against his broad chest, listening to the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat—the anchor that had pulled her out of the abyss and given her a love fiercer and deeper than she ever could have imagined.
The private jet, the midnight storm over the Atlantic, and the terrified mafia boss in row four felt like a lifetime away. Yet, as Dominic’s arm tightened securely around her waist, Elena knew that no matter what storms lay ahead, she was exactly where she was always meant to be.
