Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Nursery

The sun broke over the jagged tree line of the Hudson Valley, casting long, fractured shadows across the custom-built nursery on the estate's master floor.

Elena stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, sipping a cup of jasmine tea Mrs. Gable had left for her. In the center of the room, Lily was sleeping soundly in a bassinet carved from dark mahogany, her tiny chest rising and falling rhythmically.

For the first time in three months, Elena’s body didn't ache with the frantic, phantom need to feed children who were no longer there. Instead, she had channeled that grief into nourishing a stranger’s child—a child who now smelled faintly of lavender and milk, and whose survival was inextricably tied to Elena’s presence.

The heavy oak door clicked open.

Dominic stepped inside. He had removed his suit jacket; his white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, the sleeves rolled up to reveal the dense, dark tattoos curling around his forearms. He moved with the silent, predatory grace of a panther, careful not to disturb the sleeping baby.

"She slept for six hours straight," Dominic murmured, stopping a few feet away from Elena. "That’s a new record."

"She’s recovering from exhaustion," Elena replied flatly, not turning away from the window. "Babies need consistency, Mr. Hayes. They need calm environments, not armed guards patrolling the perimeter and helicopters landing on the lawn at 3:00 a.m."

"My security is what keeps us alive, Elena," Dominic said, his tone low and steady. "You think my empire was built on handshakes? There are men in Chicago and Palermo who would love nothing more than to use my daughter as leverage against me. By bringing you into this house, I’ve put a target on your back as well."

Elena finally turned around, her amber eyes flashing with sudden, sharp anger. "I didn't ask to be brought into your house! You kidnapped me under the guise of an inevitable custody arrangement!"

"I didn't kidnap you," Dominic corrected, taking a slow step closer. "I offered you sanctuary. And in return, you offered my daughter life. We are tied now, Elena. Whether you want to admit it or not."

"My life is in New York," Elena hissed, stepping up to him, refusing to cower beneath his towering height. "My home, my memories, my husband’s grave—everything I have is three hours away. You can't just keep me here like a prized bird in a gilded cage."

Dominic looked down at her, his dark eyes softening just enough to be dangerous. He reached out, his large, calloused hand hovering inches from her cheek before stopping himself, letting his hand fall back to his side.

"Try to leave, Elena," he challenged softly. "Walk out those front gates. See how far you get before my men gently escort you back. But before you try, ask yourself what you’re really running from. Are you running from me... or are you running from the fact that holding my daughter made you feel alive for the first time since your family died?"

The words struck Elena like a physical blow. Her breath caught in her throat, tears stinging the backs of her eyes. How did he know? How could he reach so effortlessly into the darkest, most agonizing corners of her soul?

Before she could form a reply, Lily let out a soft, sleepy yawn from her bassinet, breaking the suffocating tension in the room.

Dominic lingered for a second longer, his gaze burning into Elena’s soul, before turning on his heel and walking out, leaving her alone with the ghosts of her past and the impossible reality of her present.
