Chapter 4 - The Network of Vipers

Three weeks blurred into a strange, surreal routine within the Hayes estate.

Elena had carved out a tentative, uneasy truce with Dominic. She cared for Lily with a fierce, unwavering devotion, treating the infant as both a healing balm for her own shattered heart and a delicate anchor in a violent world. In return, Dominic provided absolute, unquestioned protection, granting Elena access to the estate’s extensive private library, organic kitchens, and secure communications.

Yet, beneath the quiet domesticity of the mansion, the underworld was beginning to stir.

It happened on a crisp Tuesday afternoon. Dominic was away in the city attending a high-level summit with the New York harbor commissioners, leaving Marcus and an elite detail of twelve guards in charge of the estate.

Elena was in the sunroom reading a historical biography while Lily played on a quilted mat at her feet, when the estate’s primary security alarms began to wail—a low, piercing klaxon that vibrated through the floorboards.

Within seconds, Marcus burst through the double doors, his hand already resting on the grip of his sidearm.

"Mrs. Vance, we have a breach at the outer perimeter gate," Marcus said sharply, his voice devoid of panic but laced with lethal readiness. "Satellite feeds show three unmarked black SUVs ramming the north security checkpoint. We are locking down the manor."

Elena’s heart leaped into her throat. She scooped Lily up into her arms, clutching the baby against her chest. "Who is it? Is it Dominic’s rivals?"

"The Moretti syndicate from Brooklyn," Marcus growled, gesturing toward the reinforced panic room hidden behind a mahogany bookcase in the corner of the study. "Don Salvatore Romano’s remnants. They think Dominic is vulnerable while he’s establishing supply lines in Manhattan. Get inside. Now."

As Marcus slammed the heavy steel door of the panic room shut, plunging them into dim, emergency-lit safety, the distant sound of automatic gunfire echoed across the estate grounds.

Inside the reinforced vault, surrounded by emergency supplies, server racks, and secondary monitors, Elena clutched Lily, her breathing coming in ragged gasps. The terrifying reality of Dominic Hayes’s world—a world of blood, bullets, and ruthless vendettas—had finally crashed through their front doors.

On the primary security monitor, Elena watched in horror as tactical operatives in black tactical gear swarmed the front lawns, engaging Dominic’s security detail in a fierce, chaotic firefight. Shards of glass exploded from the grand foyer windows; smoke billowed from the courtyard.

Then, her phone—a secure satellite device Dominic had given her—buzzed violently on the steel table.

It was a direct encrypted call from Dominic.

Elena swiped answer with a trembling hand. "Dominic! Where are you? They’re attacking the house!"

"I know," Dominic’s voice came through the speaker, dangerously calm, though the background noise of screeching tires and heavy artillery fire told a very different story. "My chopper is touching down on the north pad in two minutes. Are you and Lily secure?"

"We're in the panic room! Marcus secured us!"

"Good," Dominic breathed, a lethal edge sharpening his tone. "Listen to me very carefully, Elena. The Morettis think they can strike my home while I'm away to force my hand on the shipping docks. They are dead wrong. Stay in that room until I unlock it with my personal biometric code. Do not open it for anyone. Do you understand?"

"Hurry, Dominic," Elena whispered, tears finally breaking free. "Please... keep us safe."

"I burn cities to the ground for less than what’s in that room," Dominic replied, and the call disconnected with a sharp click.

Ten minutes later, the gunfire outside stopped as abruptly as it had begun. Heavy boots approached the panic room door, followed by the distinct sound of a keycard reader scanning the digital lock.

Bip.

The heavy steel door hissed open, swinging inward.

Elena raised a heavy brass paperweight from the desk, ready to strike whoever stepped through. But the weapon lowered instantly as the tall, broad silhouette of Dominic Hayes stepped into the vault.

His suit jacket was torn at the shoulder, a smear of dried blood stained his white collar, and his expression was that of an avenging angel carved from granite.

He didn't say a word. He crossed the room in two strides, pulling both Elena and Lily into his arms in a crushing, desperate embrace that squeezed every ounce of air from her lungs.

"You're safe," Dominic murmured against her hair, his own breathing ragged. "They're all dead or captured. No one touches my family."
