Chapter 7 - The Crown We Built TogetherSeventy-two hours.

That was all we had to dismantle a conspiracy orchestrated by international financiers and a vengeful ex-fiancée.

Instead of hiding in the penthouse, Nathan and I went straight down into the war room on the seventieth floor. We didn't sleep. We didn't rest. Side by side at the massive digital screens, we pulled apart every single loan agreement, shell company transaction, and creditor communication that had passed through the international bank over the past five years.

My analytical mind, which had spent years organizing messy data, worked in perfect sync with Nathan’s ruthless strategic genius.

By Thursday night, we found the smoking gun: a hidden side-letter proving that the international bank’s CEO had conspired with Cynthia to artificially manufacture a default condition by abusing emergency succession clauses.

Friday morning at 8:55 AM.

The emergency tribunal of the Board of International Creditors convened in the Grand Ballroom of the Palmer House Hilton in downtown Chicago. Five hundred investors, journalists, and hostile bankers sat in tense anticipation, waiting for Northstar Technologies to fall.

Nathan and I walked into the ballroom side by side. He wore his sharpest black tuxedo; I wore a sweeping emerald-green silk gown that caught the chandelier light like armor. He didn't hold my hand like a prop; his arm was wrapped securely, protectively around my waist, broadcasting a united front of unbreakable strength.

At the head of the tribunal sat Lord Sterling—Cynthia’s uncle and the head of the international banking consortium—wearing a smug, untouchable smile.

“Mr. Carter,” Lord Sterling sneered into the microphone. “You have five minutes to explain why your company should not be liquidated for breach of financial solvency.”

Nathan didn't flinch. He walked up to the podium, calmly plugged a secure flash drive into the main terminal, and turned the screen toward the entire auditorium.

“I won't waste five minutes,” Nathan’s voice rang across the silent hall, calm, powerful, and utterly dominant. “Instead, I’ll take thirty seconds to display the wire transfers proving that Lord Sterling and his niece conspired to commit corporate fraud by weaponizing fraudulent default clauses.”

Bright, unedited bank records, encrypted emails, and recorded phone conversations flooded the massive auditorium screens in high definition.

Lord Sterling’s smug smile vanished instantly. He slammed his fist on the table, turning pale as the journalists in the back row began frantically snapping photos and typing headlines.

“This is slander!” Lord Sterling shouted, standing up. “Shut those screens off!”

“It’s not slander, Lord Sterling,” I stepped up to the second podium beside Nathan, my voice clear and unwavering. “It’s forensic analysis. And copies have already been transmitted to the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission.”

The room erupted into absolute chaos.

Within ten minutes, the tribunal was dissolved, the credit freeze was permanently lifted, and Northstar Technologies was not only saved—it was stronger, cleaner, and more untouchable than ever before.

As we stepped out of the grand ballroom into the crisp Chicago sunlight, the paparazzi swarmed the steps, flashing cameras blinding us like a constellation of stars.

Nathan didn't let go of my waist. He pulled me closer against his chest, shielding me from the crush of reporters, before opening the door of our waiting town car.

Once the doors locked and we pulled away from the chaos, the heavy silence of the car wrapped around us like a warm embrace.

Nathan turned to me, his dark eyes shining with a depth of emotion that words could never capture. He reached out, gently cupping my face with his warm, calloused hand, his thumb brushing my cheekbone.

“You saved my empire, Maya,” he whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

“We saved each other, Nathan,” I replied softly, resting my hand over his heart, feeling its steady, powerful beat beneath my palm.

Months later, far away from corporate boardrooms, glass fortresses, and flashing cameras, we stood together on a quiet bluff overlooking the sunlit waters of Lake Michigan. There were no contracts to sign, no secrets to hide, and no corporate raiders waiting in the shadows.

When Nathan knelt down on one knee beneath the golden evening sky, holding out a ring that sparkled like the city lights we had conquered together, he didn't talk about stocks, shares, or security clauses.

He looked deep into my eyes and asked for my heart.

And for the first time in my life, I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that I had finally found someone who loved the soul behind the door, forever.
