Chapter 2 - The Glass FortressThe silence that followed my question felt heavier than the Chicago skyline.

Nathan took a slow step toward me, his hands raised slightly as if approaching a frightened animal. “Maya, stop. Breathe. Let me explain how this started versus where we are right now.”

“Explain what?” I stepped back, my boots crunching on the gravel path. “That the billionaire CEO who supposedly didn't care about anyone overheard a vulnerable moment, calculated my usefulness, and turned my deepest insecurity into his corporate Get Out of Jail Free card?”

“It wasn't calculated,” Nathan said, his voice dropping into a low, resonant plea that tugged painfully at my chest. “Do you think I planned to fall for you? Do you have any idea what it’s like living in my world? Every person who smiles at me wants a promotion, an investment, or a favor. When I heard you in that hallway—when you said you were waiting for someone who wanted your heart before your body—for the first time in my adult life, I realized I wanted the exact same thing.”

“And yet, the moment your company is threatened by your ex-fiancée and a board of sharks, your first instinct is to use me as your corporate armor,” I retorted, my voice trembling with a mixture of heartbreak and anger. “You’re a master strategist, Nathan. How am I supposed to know where the strategy ends and your feelings begin?”

Before he could answer, a sleek black town car pulled up beside the curb, its tinted windows rolling down to reveal Julian Vance sitting in the back seat, holding a thick leather-bound folder.

“Mr. Carter,” Julian called out cautiously. “We have twenty minutes before the legal team locks down the preliminary filings for tomorrow morning. If Miss Bennett isn't registered as your intended partner by midnight, the board will invoke the succession clause.”

Nathan didn't look at Julian. His dark eyes remained locked on mine, burning with a fierce, possessive intensity. “I am not letting you go, Maya. Not to a corporation, not to my past, and not to your own doubts.”

“I’m going home, Nathan,” I said firmly, turning my back on him and stepping toward the street to hail a cab.

“If you walk away tonight,” Nathan’s deep voice called out behind me, steady and absolute, “tomorrow morning at nine o’clock, my ex-fiancée Cynthia will walk into the executive boardroom on the eightieth floor, claim that my personal life is unverified, and strip Northstar Technologies of everything I built. And the only person who can stop her is the woman who taught me what a real heart looks like.”

I froze with my hand raised for a taxi. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.

He was cornered. And he was weaponizing my loyalty against my self-preservation.

Without waiting for my answer, Nathan stepped close enough that I could smell his familiar cedarwood and amber cologne. He didn't force me into the car. He simply opened the door, stepped back, and left the choice entirely in my hands.

It was the ultimate test of everything I claimed I wanted: a man who gave me a choice, even when his entire empire was burning to the ground.
