Chapter 6 - The Shadows ReturnThe following morning, the corporate world was in absolute chaos.

Headlines across financial blogs screamed about Cynthia’s abrupt ouster and the sudden rise of a mysterious data analyst named Maya Bennett to the co-trustee board of Northstar Technologies. Reporters camped out in the lobby downstairs, trying to snap photos of the woman who had conquered the ruthless billionaire CEO.

Inside the penthouse, however, time seemed to stand still.

Nathan had cancelled all morning appointments, choosing to spend the sunrise sitting across from me at the marble kitchen island, drinking coffee and talking about things that had nothing to do with stocks, acquisitions, or balance sheets.

For the first time in my life, I felt cherished. Not useful. Not productive. Simply adored.

Then, at precisely eleven o'clock, the private security intercom buzzed.

Julian Vance’s voice came through the speaker, tight with professional panic. “Mr. Carter, we have an urgent perimeter breach. A private courier just bypassed the lobby desk and delivered a sealed envelope directly to my office marked urgent and confidential—addressed to both you and Miss Bennett.”

Nathan’s jaw clenched. “Bring it up immediately.”

Ten minutes later, Julian exited the private elevator, holding a heavy black envelope stamped with a red wax seal—the private crest of the international banking conglomerate that held Northstar’s primary debt financing.

Nathan tore open the seal, pulling out a single sheet of thick parchment.

As his eyes scanned the printed lines, the color slowly drained from his face. The terrifying, ice-cold CEO mask slammed back down over his features with brutal speed.

“What is it, Nathan?” I asked, my stomach dropping.

He handed me the paper.

At the bottom of the page, above a menacing signature, sat a devastating clause:

Due to recent executive restructuring and unverified personal affiliations under the emergency succession charter, Northstar Technologies’ primary credit line of four billion dollars is hereby frozen, effective immediately, pending a full moral and financial audit conducted by the Board of International Creditors.

“It’s a trap,” Nathan growled, standing up so fast his chair scraped loudly against the hardwood floor. “Cynthia didn't act alone. She was working with the international creditors to force a default so they could carve up the company and sell it off for parts.”

“If the credit line is frozen,” I said, my voice trembling as I calculated the numbers in my head, “Northstar won't be able to make payroll by Friday. The entire company will collapse in seventy-two hours.”

Nathan looked down at me, his eyes burning with a dark, fierce determination that defied the catastrophe looming over us.

“They want a war?” Nathan whispered, his voice dangerously calm. “Then we’ll give them a war. But this time, we do it together.”
