Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Sky VaultBy 2:00 AM, the top-floor executive command suite at The Moretti Tower in downtown Chicago was operating under an impenetrable, non-negotiable tactical lockdown.

Outside the private elevator banks, twenty armed Vance Security operators in dark charcoal suits guarded every corridor. Inside, four-year-old Sophie was fast asleep in a grand master bedroom, holding her plush astronaut bear, while twenty-five-year-old Emily Carter sat beside her bed, softly humming a lulaby until the little girl's breathing turned deep and rhythmic.
In the adjoining private executive study, I sat at a broad black granite conference table, alongside Senior Corporate Prosecutor Bridget Colton and my operational security director, Marcus Vance.
Bridget Colton opened three heavy, red-sealed leather binders, sliding digital ledgers and audio transcripts flat onto the table before me:
"Alexander," Bridget spoke flatly, her sharp blue eyes holding surgical professional fury. "The forensic audit into Arthur Sterling, Sterling Logistics, and the 2024 chemical fire is complete."
I leaned over the granite table, my hands planted flat on the counter, my dark gray eyes burning with an unshakeable, predatory fire. "Explain it."
Bridget tapped the digital displays:
THE FABRICATED CASUALTY REPORT: DNA logs recovered from a hidden Swiss server proving the remains recovered from the 2024 fire belonged to an unidentified body double, bought from a local morgue.
THE ONE-HUNDRED-FIFTY-MILLION-DOLLAR EMBEZZLEMENT: Proof that Arthur Sterling systematically diverted $150 million from Isabella’s biological trust into Panamanian shell accounts over two years.
THE RECOVERY OF DONNA ISABELLA: Intercepted satellite telemetry confirming thirty-year-old Donna Isabella Moretti is currently being held alive under heavy guard in a private medical clinic in Geneva, kept in a medically induced coma to prevent her from reclaiming her fifty-one percent controlling equity in Sterling Global.
My breath stopped in my chest.
My knuckles turned stark white against the granite table.
"She's alive..." I whispered, my deep baritone cracking with a profound, gut-wrenching mixture of heartbreak, hope, and absolute fury. "Isabella is alive in Geneva."
Emily Carter stepped quietly into the study from the bedroom, wearing a simple woolen sweater provided by my staff. She looked at the documents with dark, shining eyes.
"Mr. Moretti," Emily spoke softly, stepping up beside my chair. "When I found that necklace in the old space helmet in your observatory three weeks ago, I knew someone had hidden it there recently. Isabella left it for you... because she knew you would never stop looking for her once you saw the moon pendant."
May you like
I walked around the granite table, looking down at Emily with a deep, quiet reverence.
"You saved my daughter's heart, Emily," I promised, my voice an iron oath that shook the room. "And tomorrow morning at the Sterling Heritage Assembly... we bring my wife home."
