Chapter 5 - The Reunion in the Shadows

An hour later, a sleek, unmarked black SUV idled quietly in the alley behind the Queens apartment building. The two unconscious Moretti operatives had been zip-tied, gagged, and bundled into the trunk of Elena’s car by two of Dominic’s most trusted street enforcers, who had arrived shortly after the shootout.
Mara sat in the back seat of the SUV, her breath fogging the tinted window. She had changed into a dark denim jacket and sturdy boots, packing her single suitcase once again. She wasn't running anymore. Running had just made her a target. If the Moretti syndicate wanted her dead to hurt Dominic, then hiding in a cheap Queens sublet was a death sentence.
The rear door of the SUV opened, and Dominic slid into the leather interior beside her.
He looked devastatingly tired. The immaculate composure he had worn that morning was entirely gone. His tie was loosened, his collar was unbuttoned, and his knuckles were bruised and raw—evidence that he had already begun tearing his own organization apart from the inside out to find out who had leaked her location.
He didn't speak immediately. He just looked at her, his dark eyes scanning her face for any sign of injury, taking in the faint smudge of soot on her cheek and the fierce, unyielding glint in her eyes.
"Are you hurt?" his voice was barely a whisper, rough with suppressed panic.
"I’m alive," Mara answered coldly, keeping her hands folded tightly in her lap. "Your tracking ring almost got me killed, Dominic. The Morettis knew where I was four hours after I walked out."
Dominic closed his eyes, a look of profound self-loathing washing over his features. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small velvet box—the very ring she had left on the nightstand that morning. He opened it, revealing the pale gold band resting against the dark fabric.
"I didn't put the transponder in there to trap you, Mara," Dominic said softly, his voice thick with rare, raw vulnerability. "In my world, enemies don't come after me—they go after the people I love. I put it there so I could always find you if the worst happened. But I never imagined... I never imagined I would be the one you needed to be found away from."
Mara looked at the ring, then up into his eyes. There were no rehearsed apologies left. No smooth corporate jargon or mafia half-truths. Just a broken man who had gambled his entire empire on the illusion that he was untouchable, only to realize he had thrown away the only pure thing in his life.
"Chloe is gone," Dominic continued, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy cadence. "Elena has already secured her confession. The Moretti syndicate thinks they've won because they caught us divided. But they made one fatal mistake."
"What's that?" Mara asked.

A dark, terrifyingly familiar smile touched the corners of Dominic’s lips—the smile of a mafia boss who had just decided to burn his enemies to ash.
"They thought when you walked out, I lost my edge," Dominic said, reaching out to gently touch her hand—not restraining her, just offering a connection. "They didn't realize that without you keeping me anchored, the monster I spent twenty years burying is finally wide awake. And I am going to tear Boston apart brick by brick to ensure you never have to look over your shoulder again."
