Chapter 2 - The Ghost of Fifth Avenue

The rain had turned to sleet by the time Mara’s dented sedan pulled into the parking lot of a modest brick apartment building in Queens. It was a far cry from the sprawling gated estate on Long Island, but as she unlocked the door to Unit 3B—a temporary sublet she had secured through an old college friend fifteen minutes after walking out—she felt a profound sense of peace. The apartment smelled faintly of old lemon polish and radiator heat, but it was safe. It belonged to her, and to her alone.

She set her suitcase on the lino floor and sat down on the sagging floral sofa, staring at her bare ring finger. For nearly a decade, she had buried her own identity beneath the terrifying weight of the Calder name. When you marry a man who controls the docks, the unions, and half the financial district, your own voice becomes a liability. You learn to swallow your suspicions, to ignore the late-night text alerts flipped face-down on the nightstand, and to smile politely at charity galas while wondering which of the smiling women across the room shared your husband's bed.

Her phone buzzed violently on the coffee table.

It was an unknown number, but she didn't need Caller ID to know who it was. She picked it up, watched the screen flash for three rings, and then silenced it completely, switching the device to airplane mode.

She had barely set the phone down when a sharp, authoritative knock echoed against her apartment door.

Mara froze. How had he found her this fast? It had been less than two hours since she left the estate.

She walked slowly to the door, peering through the small fish-eye peephole. It wasn't Dominic. Instead, standing in the dimly lit hallway was a tall, impeccably dressed woman with sharp cheekbones and dark, piercing eyes—Elena Vance, Dominic’s primary legal counsel and the fiercely loyal fixer who managed the syndicate’s corporate clean-up operations.

Mara unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open just a few inches, keeping the security chain latched.

"You're wasting your time, Elena," Mara said coldly before the lawyer could speak. "I’m not going back, and no amount of legal intimidation or cash settlements will make me sign a non-disclosure agreement."

Elena let out a tired sigh, her professional facade cracking just enough to reveal genuine concern. "Mara, open the chain. I’m not here as Dominic’s lawyer. I’m here as someone who has watched you drown in that gilded cage for years. And trust me... Dominic isn't sending me to threaten you. He’s tearing his own house apart because he has no idea how to function without you."
