Chapter 4 - The Threat at the Door

Before Mara could process Elena’s warning, a low, metallic thud echoed from the apartment building’s shared hallway, followed by the muffled sound of a heavy body slumping against drywall.
Elena’s hand instantly flew to the small, concealed holster beneath her blazer, her professional composure vanishing into pure, tactical alertness. "Get away from the door," she hissed, drawing a sleek, suppressed Walther pistol in one fluid motion.
Mara didn't panic. Years of living on the periphery of the underworld had taught her one vital rule: when violence comes knocking, hesitation is fatal. She grabbed a heavy iron frying pan from the small kitchenette counter, holding it like a club as she crept toward the hallway.
Three sharp raps echoed against the door—not a polite knock, but the distinct, rhythmic signal of an armed entry team.
"Elena, the fire escape is through the bedroom window," Mara whispered urgently.
"No time," Elena muttered, her eyes locked on the frosted glass panel of the front door. "They've already cleared the stairwell."
Suddenly, the door exploded inward. The deadbolts splintered, and the wooden frame cracked apart as two masked men dressed in black tactical gear surged into the apartment.
The first man crossed the threshold with a silenced submachine gun raised, but Elena was faster. Two crisp, muffled shots cracked through the small room. The intruder stumbled backward, dropping his weapon and collapsing onto the lino floor.
The second man lunged forward, grabbing Elena by the lapel and slamming her against the wall, dislodging her gun.
Without thinking, Mara charged across the room like a linebacker, swinging the heavy iron frying pan with every ounce of fury she had bottled up over the past nine years. The iron connected squarely with the attacker’s temple with a sickening crunch. The man’s eyes rolled back instantly, and he dropped like a stone at her feet.
Silence slammed back into the apartment, broken only by the ragged breathing of Elena and Mara.
Elena slid down the wall, clutching a graze wound on her shoulder, staring up at Mara with a mixture of sheer astonishment and deep respect. "Remind me never to get on your bad side, Mara."
Mara dropped the frying pan onto the carpet, her hands shaking violently now that the adrenaline was beginning to wear off. She looked down at the two unconscious men dressed in Moretti tactical gear.
"They found me within four hours of leaving the estate," Mara whispered, a cold realization dawning on her. "Which means Dominic’s perimeter isn't the only one compromised. They're tracking my phone."
May you like
Elena reached into her coat pocket, pulled out a small electronic signal jammer, and tossed it onto the floor, where it emitted a quiet, steady hum. "They were tracking the emergency backup transponder embedded in your wedding ring."
Mara stared at the ring box she had left sitting innocently on her bedside table back at the mansion. Dominic hadn't just given her jewelry; he had given her a high-security tracking beacon, disguised as a token of affection, ensuring she could never truly escape his orbit.
