Chapter 4 - A New EmpireThe next three weeks passed in a blur of swift, ruthless transformation.

Dominic’s promises were executed with terrifying precision. The downfall of the Wexler family was swift and absolute. Headlines across the nation blasted the scandal: WEXLER HEDGE FUND EMPIRE COLLAPSES AMID MURDER AND FRAUD CHARGES. Nathan and his father were held without bail, facing a mountain of federal charges ranging from wire fraud to conspiracy to commit murder.
Emily tried to reach out to me dozens of times. She sent desperate text messages, called from unknown numbers, and even showed up at my old apartment building—only to find that I had liquidated the lease, sold my furniture, and completely cut ties. When she attempted to access her trust fund, she discovered that our parents' estate had been legally restructured years ago; I was the sole executor, and I closed her allowance permanently. She was forced to take a job as a waitress in New Jersey, living in a cramped studio apartment, finally facing the harsh realities of the real world.
Meanwhile, my life had moved to a higher sphere entirely.
I was living permanently at Villa Bellardi. Dominic hadn't pushed or rushed me; he had simply given me space, resources, and a new position. I was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of the newly restructured Bellardi Cultural Foundation—a legitimate, massive philanthropic venture funded entirely by Dominic's legal assets.
"You built the old foundation with your sweat while others stole from it," Dominic had told me as he handed me the corporate seal in his private study. "Now, build something that belongs to you. No one will ever take credit for your work again."
Sitting in my new corner office overlooking Manhattan, dressed in a sharp, custom-tailored dark navy suit with my hair styled in sleek, professional waves, I barely recognized the hesitant woman who had begged a stranger for a kiss three weeks ago.
A soft knock at my office door broke my concentration.
"Come in," I called out.
The door opened, and Dominic walked in. He was holding a slender leather briefcase, looking impeccably handsome in a charcoal three-piece suit. Despite being thirty years my senior, his presence was magnetic, carrying a raw, grounded power that made every room he entered feel smaller.
"You're working late," Dominic said, setting the briefcase on my mahogany desk.
"We have the inaugural gala for the new foundation next week," I smiled, leaning back in my chair. "I want to make sure every single detail is perfect. No missing funds, no secret service hallways, no cheating fiancés."
Dominic laughed—a deep, rare sound that sent a warm shiver straight down my spine. "I think you have things well under control, Eleanor."
"What’s in the briefcase?" I asked, nodding toward the leather bag.
Dominic’s expression sobered slightly. He unlatched the silver clips and opened the lid, turning the briefcase toward me.
Inside lay three thick manila folders sealed with red wax.
"What is this?"
"The remaining assets of the Wexler Group," Dominic explained smoothly. "Through several shell corporations, I have quietly bought up eighty percent of their liquidated real estate portfolio, including their flagship office tower on Madison Avenue. I am transferring ownership of the tower to you."
I gasped, looking up from the documents to his calm gray eyes. "Dominic, no. That’s worth hundreds of millions of dollars! I can't accept that."
"It isn't a gift, Eleanor. It’s restitution," he said firmly, leaning over the desk, resting his palms on the polished wood. "You were targeted because of their greed. You lost your home, your reputation was dragged through the mud, and you were almost framed for federal crimes. The Wexlers owe you this. I am simply acting as the debt collector."
I stared at the documents, my heart racing. "You are incredible, do you know that?"
"I am a man who protects what is mine," Dominic said softly, his voice dropping into that deep, intimate register that always made my breath hitch.
The air between us charged with sudden, thick heat. Over the last three weeks, the boundaries between us had grown increasingly blurred. We shared late-night dinners in his study, long discussions about art, business, and philosophy, and quiet mornings in the gardens. The physical tension that had started with that desperate kiss in the ballroom had grown into a slow, burning fire that neither of us could ignore any longer.
"Dominic," I whispered, standing up from my chair and walking around the desk until I was standing right in front of him. "What happens now?"
"What do you want to happen, Eleanor?" he asked, his dark eyes searching my face, his hands coming up to rest gently on my hips. His touch was warm, firm, and completely grounding.
"I spent my whole life being scared of making the wrong choice," I said, looking straight into his eyes. "I trusted a boy who was weak and cruel because he seemed safe. But you... you're dangerous, Dominic. Everyone in this city fears you."
"Does that terrify you?" he asked quietly.
"No," I replied, wrapping my arms around his neck, pulling myself closer to his chest. "It makes me feel like I can finally breathe. Because I know as long as I am with you, no one in this world can ever hurt me again."
Dominic’s gray eyes darkened with intense passion. He leaned down and captured my lips in a kiss that was vastly different from the one in the ballroom. This wasn't for show. This wasn't for revenge. This was real, deep, and filled with a raw, consuming hunger that swept away every last remnant of my past.
When he finally pulled back, both of us breathing heavily, he rested his forehead against mine.
"You belong here, Eleanor," he murmured. "By my side. In my world."
"I know," I whispered.
Then, the sudden, loud chiming of his private phone broke the moment.
Dominic stepped back slightly, pulling the phone from his pocket. He looked at the caller ID, and his jaw tightened instantly into a hard, rigid line.
"What is it?" I asked, sensing the sudden shift in the air.
Dominic swiped the screen to answer, placing the phone to his ear. "Speak."
He listened for three seconds before his eyes snapped to mine, filled with a sudden, icy fury.
"Where?" Dominic barked into the phone. "Block all the exits! Do not let them leave the district!"
He hung up the phone and looked at me, his fists clenching tightly at his sides.
"Dominic, what happened?"
"Nathan," Dominic said, his voice cold enough to freeze blood. "He was being transferred from the federal holding facility to the courthouse for his arraignment twenty minutes ago. An armed transport team ambushed the van."

My heart dropped into my stomach. "Did he escape?"
"He didn't escape alone," Dominic said, his eyes burning with deadly intent. "His father’s old associate—Vincenzo Moretti—orchestrated the break. And according to my surveillance team, they just snatched your sister from her apartment."
