Chapter 3 - Shadows of the PastSleep was impossible.

I spent the rest of the night pacing the length of the grand guest suite. The room was larger than my entire apartment, draped in cream-colored silk, with antique furniture and French doors that opened onto a balcony overlooking the dark estate gardens. But every time I closed my eyes, I saw Nathan’s twisted, panicked face, Emily’s spiteful smirk, and the icy glint of the sapphire ring.
By 6:00 AM, the first rays of gray dawn began to bleed through the heavy curtains. I washed my face, pulled my hair back into a neat knot, and put back on the black evening dress from the night before—the only clothes I had.
When I walked down the grand staircase, I found Dominic already awake. He was sitting at a dark wood table in the glass-walled sunroom, wearing a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, reading through a stack of financial documents while sipping dark coffee.
"You didn't sleep," he observed, looking up as I entered.
"Neither did you," I replied, sitting down across from him.
A maid silently stepped forward, pouring me a cup of hot black coffee before retreating into the background.
"I don't sleep much these days," Dominic said, setting his papers aside. "Old habits. When you spend thirty years watching your back, your brain forgets how to turn off."
"What happened last night?" I asked, taking a sip of the strong, bitter brew. "You spoke on the phone... about Pier 42."
Dominic looked at me calmly. "Nathan and your sister attempted to board a private jet at Teterboro Airport at three in the morning. They had two duffel bags packed with three million dollars in laundered cash and forged passports bound for Dubai."
My chest tightened. "They were going to leave me behind to take the blame for the foundation's missing funds."
"Yes," Dominic said coldly. "Nathan had already drafted documents transferring total legal liability of the Blake-Wexler Foundation's accounts to your name. Had they escaped, the FBI would have arrested you by noon today for embezzlement."
A surge of white-hot anger washed over me, burning away the last lingering shreds of grief. I had loved Nathan. I had trusted him. I had treated Emily like my own daughter after our parents died. And they had been prepared to frame me, throw me into a federal prison, and spend the rest of their lives living off stolen millions in the Middle East.
"Where are they now?" I asked, my voice dropping an octave, steady and hard.
Dominic raised an eyebrow, a flicker of genuine respect shining in his eyes. "They are being held at a private facility near the docks. My men are currently reviewing the financial ledgers found in their luggage."
"I want to see them," I said firmly.
Dominic paused, studying me closely. "Eleanor, what happens down there will not be pleasant. I am not a soft man, and I do not deal with traitorous pests gently."
"I don't care," I said, leaning forward across the table. "They took my life, my dignity, and my trust. I spent years playing the sweet, compliant woman who fixed their mistakes. I want to look Nathan in the eye when his world finishes collapsing."
A slow, dark smile touched Dominic’s lips. "You have remarkably sharp claws for a party planner, Eleanor."
"I learned from the best last night," I replied evenly.
Dominic stood up, buttoning his vest. "Very well. But you stay close to me. In my world, weakness is a death sentence, but boldness... boldness is respected."
Half an hour later, we arrived at Pier 42—a sprawling, unmarked commercial warehouse situated on the industrial edge of the Hudson River. The morning fog hung thick over the water, shrouding the rusty shipping containers and heavy machinery in a ghostly gray mist.
Two heavily armed men in black tactical gear bowed their heads as Dominic approached the small steel side door. They pushed it open, revealing a cavernous, dimly lit interior smelled of salt water, rust, and copper.
In the center of the warehouse, illuminated by a single overhead floodlight, were two chairs tied securely to heavy wooden posts.
Bound to those chairs were Nathan and Emily.
Nathan’s tuxedo was torn, his tie missing, his hair disheveled. His face was bruised, and he was weeping quietly. Emily sat beside him, her makeup smeared with tears, her designer dress stained with dirt.
When the heavy steel door slammed shut behind us, both of them snapped their heads up.
"Eleanor!" Emily shrieked, her voice echoing off the corrugated iron walls. "Eleanor, tell them to let us go! Please! He's crazy! These men kidnapped us!"
"Eleanor, please!" Nathan sobbed, struggling against the heavy ropes binding his wrists. "I'm sorry! I was confused! Emily seduced me, she tricked me into the whole thing! I still love you, Eleanor! Please, talk to Mr. Bellardi!"
I walked slowly toward them, my high heels clicking rhythmically against the concrete floor. Dominic walked half a step behind me, a dark shadow of absolute power at my back.
I stopped right in front of Nathan. He looked up at me, eyes wide with pathetic, snickering hope.
"You blamed my sister in your very first sentence," I said coldly, looking down at him with utter disgust. "You really are a coward, aren't you?"
"Eleanor, baby, listen to me—"
SLAP.
The sound of my hand striking Nathan’s face cracked through the massive warehouse like a gunshot. His head snapped to the side, his cheek swelling immediately red.
Emily gasped, shrinking back in her chair.
"That," I said, my voice ice-cold, "is for the three years I wasted loving a leech."
I turned to Emily. Her eyes filled with fresh tears, but I could still see the venom lurking beneath her fear.
"And you," I said softly to my sister. "I gave up my youth for you. I worked two jobs so you could go to college. I covered for you every time you screwed up. And you repaid me by stepping into my bed and helping my fiancé try to send me to prison."
"You always thought you were better than me!" Emily spat out, her tears drying up instantly, replaced by ugly rage. "Saint Eleanor! The perfect daughter! The hard worker! I hated you! I hated every sacrifice you forced down my throat! Nathan gave me attention! He gave me luxury!"
"He gave you a ticket to a federal penitentiary," Dominic’s voice cut through the air like a razor.
Dominic stepped forward, standing right beside me. He placed a heavy, reassuring hand on my shoulder.
"Nathaniel Wexler," Dominic said calmly. "The U.S. Attorney’s office has just executed a search warrant on your family estate. They found the off-shore account keys, the double-ledger books for the foundation, and the physical evidence connecting your father to the sabotage of my son’s vehicle."
Nathan’s face went completely grey. "No... no, please..."
"Your father was arrested twenty minutes ago," Dominic continued mercilessly. "Your assets are frozen. Your name is ruined. By noon, the media will publish every single detail of your pathetic crimes."
Dominic then turned to the guards standing in the shadows.
"Cut the girl loose," Dominic ordered, gesturing to Emily.
Emily blinked in shock as a guard sliced through her ropes. She scrambled to her feet, shaking violently. "You're... you're letting me go?"
"You are free to leave, Miss Vance," Dominic said, his voice laced with pure contempt. "You have no money, no connections, and no skills. Your sister will no longer pay your rent, cover your debts, or shield you from the consequences of your existence. You will spend the rest of your life clawing in the dirt, knowing that you traded the only person who ever truly cared about you for a man who is going to spend the next thirty years in a maximum-security prison."
Emily looked at me, her mouth opening to speak, but the icy, dead look in my eyes made her stop. She turned and ran out of the warehouse, her heels clicking wildly until the heavy doors slammed shut behind her.
Nathan began to scream, thrashing in his chair. "Eleanor! Don't leave me! Please! Dominic, please! Have mercy!"
Dominic didn't even look at him. He gently took my hand, turning me away from the wretched man crying under the light.
"Let's go, Eleanor," Dominic said softly. "The trash has been marked for collection."
As we walked out into the crisp morning air, leaving Nathan’s screams echoing into the fog, I felt a strange, thrilling sensation rising in my chest.
