Chapter 6 - The Festival of the Golden EmeraldIn late September 2026, ten months after that fateful night in his bedroom, the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel in Chicago was packed to absolute capacity for the inaugural Sophie Miller Heritage & Corporate Integrity Gala.

Over five hundred prominent business leaders, supreme court justices, federal prosecutors, and high-society matriarchs gathered beneath sparkling crystal chandeliers.
Standing at the main presentation podium, wearing a dark bespoke charcoal tuxedo, his broad six-foot-four frame squared, his handsome face glowing with deep, quiet pride, was Massimo Romano.
Beside him stood Donna Sophie Miller-Romano, looking breathtaking in a floor-length dark emerald silk evening gown that celebrated her graceful figure, her hazel eyes glowing with complete happiness.
Around my neck hung my late grandmother's restored silver signet pendant.
Massimo adjusted the microphone, his deep, resonant baritone echoing cleanly through the high-fidelity speakers:
"Ten months ago, a brave young woman opened the wrong bedroom door in my house, caught me holding a pistol in a towel, and saved my soul," Massimo announced to the silent room, his storm-gray eyes shining with genuine, unshakeable devotion as he looked down at me. "And on that night, she shattered a traitor's conspiracy, claimed her true birthright, and brought my entire world back to the light."
Massimo held his champagne glass high under the glittering lights.
