Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Sabotaged TrustBy 2:00 AM, the top-floor executive command suite at The Romano Tower in downtown Chicago was operating under an impenetrable, non-negotiable tactical lockdown.

Outside the private elevator banks, twenty armed Vance Security operators in dark suits guarded every corridor. Inside, I sat in a high-backed velvet armchair, wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket provided by Massimo’s staff, holding a warm mug of chamomile tea while my hands slowly stopped shaking.
Across the broad black granite conference table sat Massimo Romano, alongside Senior Corporate Prosecutor Bridget Colton and two federal forensic accounting experts.
In the corner of the room, restrained in a heavy leather chair under the watchful eye of Marcus Vance, was fifty-four-year-old Elena—the senior housekeeper who had worked for the Romano family for fifteen years.
Bridget Colton opened three heavy, red-sealed leather binders, sliding digital ledgers and wiretap transcripts flat onto the table before Massimo and me:
"Massimo, Sophie," Bridget spoke crisp and fast, her sharp blue eyes holding surgical professional fury. "The forensic audit into Elena, her hidden offshore accounts, and the Vitali Syndicate is complete."
Massimo stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the stormy Chicago skyline, his jacket off, his sleeves rolled up to reveal his muscular, tattooed forearms, a glass of untouched bourbon in his hand.
"Explain it to her, Bridget," Massimo commanded quietly.
Bridget tapped the digital displays:
THE FIFTEEN-MILLION-DOLLAR BRIBES: Bank registries documenting Adriana Vitali—Massimo's prospective arranged fiancée—and her father, Victor Vitali, transferring $15 million into Panamanian shell accounts held by Elena over three years.
THE FORGED ENGAGEMENT MANDATE: Intercepted wiretaps proving Victor Vitali planned to force an emergency marriage between Massimo and Adriana to gain legal access to the Romano Maritime Shipping Berths, intending to frame Massimo for a $100 million federal contraband operation.
THE SOVEREIGN TRUST DEED: Original probate documents confirming that twenty-two-year-old Sophie Miller is actually the biological granddaughter of the late Arthur Romano's primary business partner, holding an irrevocable thirty percent common stock equity claim over the entire Romano Logistics Network—a claim her late mother had hidden to protect her from syndicate wars.
My hands tightened around my teacup until the porcelain creaked.
"My... my mother's family...?" I rasped out, tears of profound shock spilling over my lashes. "I'm not just a maid...?"
Massimo walked across the room, dropping flat onto one knee right in front of my chair. The feared Don who commanded half of Chicago reached out, taking my small, cold hands into his broad, calloused palms, pressing his lips gently against my knuckles.
"They used your aunt's medical debts to track you down, Sophie," Massimo promised, his storm-gray eyes flashing with an icy, terrifying fire. "They thought sending you into my bedroom would create a scandal that forced me into marrying Adriana. They didn't know you were the rightful heiress to this empire."
I looked into Massimo's eyes, feeling the terrifying vulnerability of my past three days dissolve, replaced by a sudden, diamond-hard resolve.
"What happens tomorrow morning at nine o'clock, Massimo?" I asked softly.

Massimo offered a soft, dangerous, breathtaking smile.
"Tomorrow morning at the family breakfast," Massimo swore, his deep baritone an iron oath that shook the quiet room, "we announce our official engagement... and we crush the Vitali family to ash."
