Chapter 1 - The Ash beneath the Grand StaircaseThe heavy oak door slammed shut behind us, locking the two of us inside the vast, dimly lit master suite of the Romano Mansion.

My breath rattled in my throat, each exhale sounding unnaturally loud against the sudden, suffocating silence of the room. The scent of rain, expensive cedarwood, and cold lavender filled the air, mingling with the metallic tang of polished steel.

Standing six-foot-four in front of me, his broad muscular shoulders still glistening with water droplets from his shower, was thirty-two-year-old Massimo Romano. The dark, intricate ink of a roaring lion snaked up his broad chest to his sharp jawline, and a thin, dangerous scar sliced cleanly through his left eyebrow. His dark gray eyes—eyes that made hardened Chicago corporate titans and rival syndicate leaders tremble—locked onto my terrified face.

"E-Elena...?" I stammered, clutching my wet maid apron over my chest, my twenty-two-year-old heart hammering violently against my ribs. "Elena sent me up here on purpose...?"

"Elena didn't just misdirect you, Sophie," Massimo said, his voice dropping into a low, subsonic baritone that vibrated right through the hardwood floorboards under my shoes. He stepped toward a mahogany wardrobe, pulling on a black silk robe and tying the sash with surgical precision, never taking his eyes off me. "She handed you a master passkey that opens only two doors in this east wing: my private quarters... and the secure archive where my late father's corporate trust ledgers are stored."

My jaw dropped. The room seemed to tilt violently on its axis.

"I don't know anything about corporate ledgers!" I cried out, taking a panicked step backward against the carved door frame. "I'm twenty-two! I was applying for college scholarships when my aunt got sick! I took this maid job three days ago to pay her hospital bills!"

Massimo reached into the drawer of his nightstand, picking up the heavy black steel pistol he had been holding when I first opened his door. He pressed a button on the frame, ejecting the magazine into his palm with a sharp, mechanical CLICK.

He looked down at the brass cartridges.

"I know you aren't an assassin, Sophie," Massimo spoke quietly, his expression unreadable. "An assassin doesn't spill dirty soapy water down her front, gasp like a frightened sparrow, and apologize three times before looking at a weapon."

I swallowed the lump of glass in my throat. "Then why did she do it?!"

Before Massimo could answer, my private cell phone—a cheap prepaid model tucked into my apron pocket—vibrated violently.

I pulled it out with trembling fingers. The screen displayed a text message from an unknown encrypted number:

If you want your aunt's medical bills paid, keep playing Massimo's fake girlfriend. Don't leave the mansion tonight. If you walk out that front gate, your aunt loses her life support at St. Jude's at midnight.

A cold, icy wave of sheer horror crashed over me, freezing the blood in my veins.

My knees buckled. I would have collapsed flat onto the carpet if Massimo’s massive, warm, calloused hand hadn't reached out, catching my arm in an iron grip, holding me steady.

His gray eyes narrowed as he looked down at my pale, hyperventilating face, then down at the screen in my hand.

"Read it to me," Massimo commanded, his voice dropping into an apocalyptic register of absolute, deathly authority.

I read the text aloud, my voice shaking so badly I could barely form the words.

When I finished, Massimo didn't shout. He didn't smash the phone.

He slowly pulled out his own encrypted satellite tablet, tapping his chief of security on a private line.

"Marcus," Massimo ordered flatly into the speaker.

"Boss?" the gravelly voice of Lieutenant Colonel Marcus Vance answered.

"Send four tactical units to St. Jude's Hospital. Secure room 412 under the name of Sophie Miller's aunt. Anyone approaching that room without my private security clearance gets detained immediately."

"Understood, Don Romano. And what about Elena?"

May you like

Massimo looked down at me, his gray eyes burning with a deep, protective, unshakeable fire that took my breath away.

"Bring Elena to the lower study," Massimo promised, his voice an iron oath that shook the silent suite. "Tonight... we find out who thinks they can use an innocent girl as bait in my home."
