Chapter 6 - The Neonatal MiracleThe dawn light broke over Chicago, casting long, golden shadows across the skyline and filtering through the vertical blinds of the NICU.

Hannah sat upright in a specialized rolling hospital chair, her fingers resting gently against the clear plastic wall of the incubator. Inside, her tiny daughter—weighing barely three pounds—lay resting under the warm, comforting hum of the phototherapy lamps. Next to her, her brother was fighting with the stubborn tenacity of a true survivor.

Ethan stood quietly behind Hannah, his hands resting on the handles of her chair. Neither of them had spoken for twenty minutes, but the heavy, suffocating wall of resentment between them had begun to soften, replaced by the fragile, overwhelming miracle of new life.

"We need names," Ethan whispered softly, breaking the silence.

Hannah didn't look back at him immediately. She watched her son’s tiny chest rise and fall. "I already chose them," she said quietly. "Gabriel for him. Because he fought his way through a storm. And Grace for her. Because grace is the only reason either of us survived."

Ethan swallowed hard, a tear finally escaping his eye and rolling down his cheek. "Gabriel and Grace Harrison," he repeated, his voice breaking. "It’s beautiful, Hannah."

"Don't use your last name, Ethan," Hannah said, turning her head to look up at him, her eyes steady and resolute. "They are my children. They survived because I clawed my way through hell to keep them safe, without a single penny from your family name. I won't let your mother anywhere near them."

"My mother has no power left," Ethan said firmly, stepping around the chair and kneeling down so he was eye-level with her. He reached out, gently taking her calloused hand in both of his. "I am cutting ties with Harrison Biotech, Ethan Harrison included. I am liquidating every trust fund, every share, and every asset my family gave me. I want to build a life with you—on your terms, in a real home, where no one can ever hurt you again."

Hannah searched his eyes, looking for the arrogant boy who had abandoned her in the rain five years ago. All she found was a broken man willing to burn his entire world to ashes just to earn the right to stand beside her.
