Chapter 1 - The Razor’s EdgeThe operating room air was sterile, cold, and thick with the metallic scent of fresh blood. The monitors shrieked an urgent, syncopated rhythm that felt like it was keeping time with the frantic pounding of Ethan Harrison’s own heart. Under the surgical lights, Hannah Parker lay pale and motionless, her life slipping away with every pulse of the digital readout.

"Fetal heart tones are dropping, Dr. Harrison!" the resident shouted, panic tightening her voice. "We're losing the twins!"

Ethan forced his hands to steady. Twelve years of elite surgical training at Johns Hopkins and St. Mary’s were designed for moments like this, but nothing in medicine could have prepared him for the shock of finding Hannah on his table. Five years of carefully constructed numbness shattered in a single glance. He wasn't the untouchable billionaire heir to the Harrison biotech fortune right now; he was just a man watching the only woman he had ever truly loved bleed out from a catastrophic placental abruption.

"Clamp the uterine bleeders! Now!" Ethan ordered, his voice cutting through the noise of the OR like glass. "Suction! I need a clear field!"

The surgical nurse moved with practiced speed, handing him instruments while sweat beaded on Ethan's forehead beneath his sterile cap. His eyes flicked to Hannah’s face. She was so thin, her skin translucent, bearing the undeniable marks of a life grinded down by exhaustion and struggle. The faded burn scar on her arm and the faint, old bruises along her ribs told a silent, devastating story of where she had been since the night he turned his back on her outside his mother's Gold Coast mansion.

Then, her eyelids fluttered.

Through a haze of pain and blood loss, Hannah’s eyes opened. They locked onto his through the surgical mask. For one agonizing moment, the chaos of the operating room melted away. Her dry, cracked lips parted, and she breathed out a single word that froze the blood in Ethan's veins:

"Yours."

Before he could process the crushing weight of what she meant, her eyes rolled back, and the monitors began a long, unbroken flatline tone.

"Code blue! She's arresting!" the anesthesiologist yelled. "Charge to twenty joules! Clear!"
