Chapter 6 - The Shadows Behind BarsIn the sterile, echoing visitors' hall of the Lake County Detention Center, the fluorescent lights flickered with a depressing, monotonous buzz.

Adrian Vance sat at the bolted metal table, wearing an orange jumpsuit that hung loosely off his shoulders. His hair was unwashed, his cheeks hollow, and his eyes bloodshot and haunted. The arrogant, untouchable corporate rising star was completely gone, replaced by a broken man who had traded an empire for a moment of vanity.

The heavy metal door at the end of the hall buzzed open.

Adrian flinched, looking up with a desperate, pathetic flicker of hope in his eyes, thinking perhaps his lawyer—or Chloe—had finally come to rescue him.

Instead, a prison guard escorted a neatly dressed, middle-aged man in a modest gray suit toward the table.

It wasn't a lawyer. It was Marcus Vance—his former HR director and sycophantic colleague.

Marcus sat down across from Adrian, sliding a manila folder across the cold steel surface. He didn't look at Adrian with pity; he looked at him like a specimen under a microscope.

"What... what is this?" Adrian rasped, his voice hoarse from days of crying in his cell.

"It's the final liquidation statement from Vance-Sterling," Marcus said flatly. "The Board formally ratified Victoria Sterling as the permanent Chairwoman and CEO of the entire holding conglomerate yesterday morning."

Adrian’s breath caught in his throat. "Victoria... she took everything?"

"She didn't have to take anything, Adrian. You handed it to her on a silver platter," Marcus said with cold amusement. "Your stock options were forfeited under the moral turpitude clause. Your pension was seized to pay back the embezzled funds. And Chloe? Her father disowned her, and she skipped the country for the Cayman Islands two days ago."

Adrian buried his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking with ragged, agonizing sobs that echoed off the concrete walls.

"I had it all," he choked out, tears leaking through his fingers. "I had the promotion, the wealth, the future... and I threw it all away because I thought she was nobody."

"You didn't think she was nobody, Adrian," Marcus said, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket. "You just forgot that royalty doesn't need to wear a crown to prove who they are."

Marcus turned and walked away, the heavy metal door buzzing shut behind him, leaving Adrian alone in the absolute darkness of his own making.
