Chapter 2 - The Morning After the FallThe Chicago morning sun broke over the skyline, casting sharp, golden beams across the glass towers of downtown. Inside the executive boardroom on the forty-fifth floor of Vance-Sterling Industries, Adrian Vance was riding the highest high of his life.

He leaned back in his ergonomic leather chair, a smug, triumphant grin plastered across his face as he swirled a cup of artisanal coffee. Across the mahogany table sat his closest corporate sycophants—Vice President of Marketing Greg Miller and Senior Director of HR Marcus Vance.
"I told you it would be easy," Adrian chuckled, resting his Italian leather shoes on the edge of the conference table. "She’s exhausted, she’s hormonal, she’s stuck in a hospital bed with three screaming infants, and she has zero liquidity. The moment I dropped those papers, she knew she was beat."
Greg nodded eagerly, laughing on cue. "Brilliant move, Adrian. Divorcing her before she could latch onto your upcoming promotion to Chief Operating Officer? That's strategic genius. And Chloe's family backing our upcoming logistics merger? It’s a total sweep."
"Speaking of Chloe," Marcus smirked, checking his watch. "She’s meeting you for brunch at the Peninsula after the board meeting to celebrate your new single status. Rumor has it the Board of Directors is going to officially ratify your COO appointment at ten o'clock sharp."
Adrian’s chest swelled with intoxicating pride. "Ten o'clock. Exactly as planned. By noon, I'll have total operational control of the eastern seaboard logistics division, and Victoria will be signing over whatever scraps are left of her dignity in some county courthouse."
At exactly 9:55 AM, the heavy oak double doors of the boardroom swung open.
Adrian didn't even bother looking up, assuming it was his secretary bringing in fresh pastry trays. "Set them by the projector, Karen."
"Karen is no longer in charge of executive catering, Mr. Vance," a cold, razor-sharp voice echoed across the expansive room.
Adrian frowned, dropping his feet from the table and looking up.
It wasn't Karen.
Standing in the doorway was Arthur Sterling, flanked by four armed corporate security guards in immaculate charcoal suits, followed by two federal marshals carrying thick black briefcases.
The color instantly drained from Adrian's face. The smug grin withered into a mask of sudden, paralyzing confusion.

"A-Arthur?" Adrian stammered, standing up so fast his chair screeched against the polished hardwood floor. "What... what are you doing here? This is an executive session. You represent the Sterling Family Trust, but this is Vance-Sterling operations—"
"This is an asset reclamation site, Mr. Vance," Arthur interrupted crisply, walking down the center aisle of the boardroom and stopping right at the edge of the table. "And as of nine minutes ago, you no longer have an office, a title, or a key to this building."
