Chapter 6 - The Final Account(Focus: Daniel’s arrest; Claire visits him one last time in the federal holding facility to deliver the final divorce decree; Madison’s sentencing.)

The federal detention facility in Lower Manhattan was a grim, sterile world of gray concrete walls, heavy iron bars, and the constant, mechanical clanging of security doors. It was a universe completely detached from the luxury penthouses, red carpets, and high-society galas that Daniel Bennett had spent his entire adult life obsessing over.
I sat behind the thick glass partition in the secure visitation room, wearing a simple, elegant grey coat. After a few minutes, a heavy steel door opened, and Daniel was led into the room by two armed federal guards.
He looked unrecognizable. He wore a bright orange inmate jumpsuit, his hands locked in heavy steel handcuffs chained to his waist. His hair was messy, a thick layer of unkempt stubble covered his jaw, and the arrogant, commanding posture of the celebrity CEO had completely collapsed into a broken, slouched defeat.
He sat down heavily on the metal stool, picking up the plastic telephone receiver with shaking hands. I picked up mine.
"Claire," he rasped, his voice hollow and broken, his eyes filling with desperate tears as he pressed his hand against the glass. "Claire, please... you have to help me get bail. The judge set it at three million dollars cash, and all my personal bank accounts have been frozen by the SEC. I can't survive in here, Claire. The other inmates... the conditions... it’s a living nightmare."
"You chose this nightmare yourself, Daniel," I said, my voice completely steady, devoid of anger or malice—only a profound, absolute indifference. "You were given everything a man could ever dream of: a loyal wife, a multi-million-dollar empire, and a pristine legacy. But your greed and your insecurity couldn't handle the fact that a woman was the true engine behind your success."
"I’m sorry!" he sobbed, the sound echoing miserably through the small plastic receiver. "I was stupid! Madison manipulated me! She convinced me that you were planning to divorce me and take the company years ago! She set me up, Claire!"
"Madison didn't sign your name to the off-shore shell companies, Daniel. You did," I replied coldly. "Madison didn't force you to embezzle twelve million dollars from the grandfather who trusted you. You did. Stop blaming your mistress for the crimes of your own arrogance."
I reached into my briefcase, pulling out a final set of legal documents stamped with the official seal of the New York Supreme Court, and pressed them flat against the glass for him to see.
"These are your final divorce decrees, Daniel," I stated calmly. "The judge granted the dissolution of our marriage this morning under the clause of flagrant criminal misconduct. Because you utilized marital assets to commit federal wire fraud, the court has stripped you of all claims to our real estate, our private funds, and the penthouse. You left this marriage with exactly what you brought into it ten years ago: absolutely nothing."
Daniel stared at the legal documents, his face contorting into a mask of pure, agonizing despair as he realized that his entire life had been completely liquidated. "What about Madison?" he whispered.
"Madison pleaded guilty to corporate extortion and wire fraud this morning," I said, sliding the papers back into my briefcase. "She was sentenced to four years in a federal corrections facility. And according to the prosecutor’s office, your trial begins in October. They are seeking a mandatory minimum sentence of twelve years."
I stood up from the metal chair, smoothing down the front of my coat.
"Claire! Wait! Don't leave me here!" Daniel shrieked, slamming his handcuffed fists violently against the glass partition, causing the metal chains to rattle furiously. "Claire! Please! I’m your husband!"

"No, Daniel," I said, looking at him one last time with an unbroken, triumphant peace. "You were just a temporary assistant to my destiny. Goodbye."
I turned on my heel and walked out of the visitation room, the heavy steel door shutting behind me with a definitive, thunderous clang that sealed his fate forever.
