Chapter 4 - The Public Ruin(Focus: Madison is arrested for corporate espionage; Daniel attempts to ambush Claire at a high-society charity gala; Claire publicly exposes his betrayal.)

The annual Met Gala Pre-Event at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum was the most exclusive social gathering of the year for Manhattan’s billionaire class. The massive, spiraling white museum walls were bathed in elegant blue lights, and the air was filled with the sound of laughter, champagne flutes clinking, and the heavy scent of designer perfumes.
I arrived alone, wearing a stunning, custom-tailored black silk gown that draped flawlessly to the floor, my family’s heirloom diamond necklace catching the light with every step. For ten years, I had walked these red carpets one step behind Daniel, playing the supportive, quiet shadow to his loud brilliance. Tonight, I walked down the center of the room alone, and the crowd parted for me like the Red Sea.
As I stood near the balcony overlooking the main floor, talking with three of the city’s most powerful commercial bankers, a sudden disturbance broke out near the main entrance stairs.
Daniel stepped into the room. He looked terrible—his face hollow, his eyes wild and bloodshot, despite his desperate attempt to look presentable in a classic tuxedo. He had bypassed the security line, using an old VIP pass that hadn't been deactivated yet. When his eyes locked onto me, he marched straight through the crowd of high-society guests, ignoring the whispers that followed his every step.
"Claire!" he called out, his voice dangerously loud, drawing the immediate attention of the surrounding elite. "Claire, we need to talk right now! You can't keep avoiding my calls! You’re destroying my life out of pure, petty jealousy!"
The bankers beside me instantly stepped forward to block him, but I raised a gentle hand, signaling them to stay back. "It’s alright, gentlemen. Let my soon-to-be-ex-husband speak his mind. It seems he has very little time left to do so."
Daniel stopped three feet from me, his breathing heavy, his hands trembling. "Claire, please... be reasonable. Madison was arrested this afternoon by federal agents outside her apartment. They charged her with wire fraud and corporate espionage. They took her computers, Claire! She’s facing ten years in prison! Did you really have to go that far? Did you have to destroy a young woman's entire life just to punish me?"
The surrounding guests gasped, the shocking revelation of Madison's public arrest instantly spreading through the ballroom like an electric current.
"Madison destroyed her own life the moment she decided to commit federal extortion, Daniel," I said, my voice completely smooth, calm, and carrying perfectly to the ears of the listening crowd. "And she destroyed your company when she thought she could use stolen trust data to blackmail a Vance. You didn't come here tonight because you care about Madison's life, Daniel. You came here because your board of directors informed you that your termination papers are being signed on Monday morning."
"Claire, I loved you!" Daniel lied desperately, reaching out to grab my arm, his face twisted in a mask of manic panic. "We were a team! Don't let a single mistake wipe out ten years of marriage! I’ll give you whatever you want! Just sign the trust release forms! Save the company!"
I stepped back, completely avoiding his touch as two heavy-set museum security guards moved in, grabbing Daniel firmly by the shoulders.
"You never loved me, Daniel," I said, looking down at him with an expression of pure, unadulterated pity. "You loved the access my family name gave you. You loved the financial safety net my trust provided. And you loved the illusion of power you felt when you stood next to me. But the illusion is officially over."
I turned to the lead security guard. "Please escort Mr. Bennett out of the building. He is no longer on the guest list for any event associated with my family."

"Claire! You can't do this to me!" Daniel screamed as the guards began to drag him backward down the grand marble staircase, his polished shoes scuffing against the stone. "I made you! You’re nothing without the Bennett Group! You’re nothing!"
The elite crowd watched in stunned, judgmental silence as the disgraced tech mogul was publicly thrown out into the rainy Manhattan night. I turned back to the commercial bankers, raised my champagne glass with absolute elegance, and smiled. "Now, gentlemen, where were we regarding the restructuring of the Austin acquisition logistics contract?"
