Chapter 3 - The Desperate Counter-Attack(Focus: Madison attempts to blackmail Claire using fabricated corporate scandals; Claire’s legal team intercepts her; the board of directors begins to turn on Daniel.)

By Friday morning, the corporate headquarters of Bennett Group on Park Avenue was a war zone wrapped in expensive glass and steel. Rumors of the disastrous Manhattan dinner had spread through the financial sector like wildfire. The company’s stock price had already dropped by seven percent in early morning trading, and the board of directors had called an emergency closed-door session.

I sat in the secure conference room of Vance Legal Enterprises, surrounded by my personal team of corporate attorneys, public relations strategists, and private investigators.

"Claire, we have a situation," Arthur Pendelton, my family’s chief legal counsel for three decades, said as he entered the room, his face unusually grim. He placed a heavy tablet on the table before me. "Madison Blake isn't going down quietly. Two hours ago, her personal attorney sent a confidential demand letter to our offices."

I looked down at the screen. The document was a highly aggressive, multi-page extortion attempt. Madison was threatening to go public to the financial media with fabricated allegations that I had been using the Vanguard Trust to engage in insider trading, claiming she had digital files and recorded conversations proving that I had manipulated Bennett Group’s stock prices to enrich my own family’s private holdings.

"She’s demanding a twenty-million-dollar severance settlement and a full retraction of the trust’s capital freeze," Arthur explained, his voice dripping with professional disdain. "If we don't comply by noon, she claims she will send the entire file to the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Wall Street Journal."

I let out a soft, dark laugh. "Madison really is out of her depth. She thinks this is a daytime soap opera where the loudest person wins. Did she honestly believe I wouldn't secure the digital servers the moment I walked out of that restaurant?"

I turned to my lead private investigator, a sharp, quiet woman named Marcus. "Marcus, what did we find on the company devices Madison used?"

Marcus smiled, opening a manila folder filled with encrypted data logs. "Madison Blake didn't realize that every device issued by Bennett Group is legally monitored by the trust's cybersecurity protocols. We traced the exact source of the 'insider trading' files she’s threatening to use. She didn't find them; she fabricated them herself using Daniel’s administrative login codes three nights ago. We have the exact IP address from her SoHo apartment, along with two years of text messages between her and Daniel planning to systematically push you out of the company once the Austin acquisition was finalized."

"Perfect," I said, leaning back in my leather chair. "Arthur, send a direct response to her attorney. Don't offer a single penny. Instead, attach the full digital forensic log of her illegal access to the company servers, along with a formal notification that we are filing federal wire fraud and extortion charges against her with the Southern District of New York. Give her exactly thirty minutes to withdraw the threat, or she can explain her evidence to the FBI."

Meanwhile, across town at the Park Avenue tower, Daniel was facing his own personal hell. The board of directors had completely cornered him.

"Daniel, the Vanguard Trust has officially locked the capital accounts!" the lead investor, an aggressive billionaire named Henderson, shouted across the boardroom table, slamming his fist down. "Without that fifty million dollars, our credit lines are defaulting by Tuesday! The Austin logistics company has already pulled out of the acquisition contract due to the negative press! Who the hell authorized your assistant to assault the chairwoman of our primary financial backing fund?"

"It was an isolated incident!" Daniel pleaded, sweat soaking through his expensive custom shirt. "Madison was under immense pressure! I’m handling it! I have everything under control!"

"You don't have a damn thing under control, Daniel!" Henderson barked. "Claire Vance is the reason this company survived the 2022 market crash. If she doesn't unlock those accounts within forty-eight hours, the board will vote unanimously to strip you of your CEO title, terminate your golden parachute, and hand full operational control over to the trust’s designated receiver. You have two days to get your wife back on your side, or you are completely finished in this city."

Daniel stared at the angry faces of his board members, realizing with a sudden, sickening clarity that the empire he thought he owned was nothing more than a house of cards—and his wife held the match.
