Chapter 6 - The Longest NightThe next thirty-six hours were a test of endurance that nearly broke my spirit.

I refused to leave the hospital. I didn't sleep. I survived on stale coffee, moving back and forth between the ICU to hold Clara’s hand and the NICU to talk to Leo through the plastic walls of his incubator.

On the second morning, Leo suffered a sudden drop in oxygen saturation. The NICU alarms blared, and three specialists rushed to his bedside. I stood outside the glass wall, clutching my chest, praying to whatever higher power was listening, begging for my son's life.

After twenty agonizing minutes, the head neonatologist stepped out, tired but smiling slightly.

"He fought through it, Ethan," the doctor said. "His lung tissue is responding to the surfactant treatment. We were able to lower his ventilator settings by 30%. He’s a fighter."

I let out a ragged breath, tears spilling down my face as I watched my little boy kick his feet in the incubator. Leo the lion.

At 2:00 p.m. that afternoon, I was sitting back in Clara’s ICU room, gently wiping her forehead with a warm cloth.

Suddenly, I felt a tiny movement under my fingers.

Clara’s eyelids fluttered. She let out a long, weak breath.

"Clara?" I gasped, leaning in close. "Clara, can you hear me?"

Her eyes slowly opened, unfocused and heavy. She blinked against the dim light of the room, looking around in confusion before her eyes finally landed on my face.

"E... Ethan?" her voice was a scratchy feather of a whisper.

"I'm here, baby! I'm right here!" I cried, kissing her forehead, her cheeks, her nose, tears flowing freely down my face.

Clara’s hand twitched weakly under mine. Panic suddenly flared in her wide eyes. Her breath hitched. "The baby... Ethan... where is our baby?"

"He's alive, Clara!" I said quickly, holding her cheek gently so she could look into my eyes. "He’s alive! His name is Leo. He's in the NICU. He's small, and he’s fighting, but the doctors say he’s getting stronger every single hour!"

Clara let out a choked sob, closing her eyes as a river of tears overflowed down her cheeks. "He's alive... oh thank God... thank God..."

"You did it, Clara," I wept, kissing her forehead. "You saved him. You were so brave."

She slowly raised her injured, bandaged hand, touching my jaw. "Ethan... I'm sorry... I fell... I broke the picture... I tried to hide the medical tests from you..."

"Shh, no," I cut her off, pressing my hand over hers. "Sarah told me everything. You don't ever have to apologize to me again. I was the one who was wrong. I stood in that doorway for a minute and let fear make me a fool. I should have trusted you instantly. I promise you, Clara... for as long as I live, I will never doubt you again."

Clara looked into my eyes, seeing the raw truth, the absolute devotion, and the endless love in them. A tiny, beautiful smile broke through her pale lips.

"I want to see my son," she whispered.

"I'll get a wheelchair," I smiled through my tears. "Let's go meet our boy."
