Chapter 1 - The Shattered Truth"Ethan... the baby... he’s coming... but something's wrong..."

Clara’s voice was a ragged whisper that tore through the heavy silence of the bedroom. The dark, suspicious storm that had been building inside my head for sixty seconds instantly dissolved, leaving behind a cold, paralyzing terror.
I fell to my knees beside the bed, my hands wrapping around her ice-cold fingers. "Clara! What happened? Where are you hurting?"
She gasped, her eyes rolling back as another violent contraction racked her body. Her grip on my hand was so tight her knuckles turned white.
"The glass..." she choked out through dry, cracked lips, nodding toward the floor where our wedding portrait lay smashed. "I fell... an hour ago. The pain started so fast... I tried to reach my phone on the nightstand... I knocked the frame over... I cut my hand trying to pick it up..."
I looked down at her right hand. Hidden beneath the folds of the ivory silk nightgown, her palm was caked in dried, smeared blood from a deep laceration near her thumb. She hadn't put her nightgown on backward out of guilt or secret betrayals; she had thrown it on in a state of blind, frantic agony, struggling through blinding contractions and a bleeding hand just to cover herself while waiting for an ambulance she was too weak to finish calling.
"The phone..." Clara sobbed, tears cutting trails through the cold sweat on her cheeks. "I dropped it... under the bed... I couldn't reach it, Ethan... I thought I was going to die here alone..."
"I'm here! I'm right here, baby, I've got you!" I yelled, reaching under the bed, grabbing her phone, and dialing 911 with shaking fingers.
As I screamed our address to the emergency dispatcher, I looked down at the pool of dark fluid seeping into the cream carpet near the foot of the bed. It wasn't just water. It was tinged with deep red.
Placental abruption. The words from our prenatal classes flashed in my mind like a alarm siren.
"They're coming, Clara! Five minutes!" I wrapped her in a heavy blanket, pulling her trembling body against my chest. As I held her, my eyes caught the silver frame on the floor. My blood turned to ice as a wave of intense self-loathing hit me.
Just two minutes ago, I had stood in the doorway judging her. I had let my mother’s toxic words poison my mind. I had wondered if my wife was unfaithful, if my unborn son was even mine, while she was bleeding out on our bedroom floor, fighting to save our child's life completely alone.
"I'm sorry," I wept, pressing my lips to her sweat-drenched forehead. "I'm so sorry, Clara..."

"Save him, Ethan..." she gasped, her breathing turning dangerously shallow. "Promise me... you'll save our son..."
Before I could answer, her body went completely limp in my arms, and her eyes closed.
